Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Wrong color bike ordered & built

I specifically chose my ordered bike from the Cannondale catalog, specifying color scheme. I wanted the men's NOT women's bike because I liked color scheme. We specifically talked about me NOT liking the women's because it was matte black and my bike fitter told me I could use the men's size. The bike shop ordered and built the correct model, but it's the WRONG color because it's the women's Bike. I HATE the color. I haven't picked up the bike yet. What do I do??? Do I have to take that bike? It was a $4,500 purchase.

Don't accept it; their fault.

I agree, don't take delivery on the wrong bike. You're spending a pretty penny, you should get what you asked for.

Regardless of how much you spend, if the shop/shipper makes an error you're under no legal obligation to purchase their mistake.

I wouldn't accept a bike for that price if they put the wrong color bar tape on it. Don't get how this is even something you should have to ask.

If you ordered a men's bike in a specific color and got a woman's bike in another color, you are under no obligation to take the bike. That's a huge error. Also, isn't the geometry of a men's and women's frame different? Not sure without looking, but I would suspect so. It might not even fit you.

If they ordered the women's bike and not the men's, that's not the same model at all!

Be nice, be firm and get what you want.

Nope, you don't have to take it. Make them give you what you wanted.

BTW, just out of curiosity, which bike did you pick out, and what color if you don't mind me asking?

Yup. Regardless if we are talking Supersix, CAAD or Synapse the women and men's geo for the same size is different. For example 54 women and 54 men have different top tube length, different seat/head tube angle, different trail, different wheelbase....basically different everything. So if they fit OP on men's version of bike and ordered the same frame size women it's not going to fit the same

Beyond all that, the womens versions all look stupid. Not just the stupid "women specific" paint but the geometry and super sloping top tubes look dumb and unecessary

One question is whether they have your deposit. If not, you're totally free to walk, or make them order the right one.

If you put down half, and the LBS chooses to be difficult, you've got a practical problem. If it's on a credit card, depending on the date of the transaction you can dispute the charge.

Presumably the LBS will do the right thing. Just saying if they don't, who's holding the money can be a factor in disputes.

I expect the bike shop knows there was a mix up and it will be no surprise to them that you won't take it. Get what you want.

As a shop owner, I always tell folks "if you're happy, tell everyone, if not tell US, since we're the only ones that can help in such a situation".

Talk to the shop. Someone made a mistake on the order form. It happens. Not your fault. There should be paperwork for the original order. Have them stick to it.

Don't take the wrong bike. I'm also curious on the color and model and all.

If, however, it grows on you and you like the geometry, serendipity then? But seriously, feel no obligation. Just tell them.

Being in sales world...... if you could let me know how they successfully make you pay for their error I would really appreciate it.

No, you don't accept a screw-up on a $4500 purchase. Totally ridiculous to even contemplate it. Also as pointed out by TrojanHorse, the geometry is bound to be a little different.

Do you have a copy of the order showing right color? Did you pay with a credit card? If so you have rights, if it was all verbal, but you had a whitness, you are in a position to fight.

Absolutely wouldn't accept it. The order is completely wrong. I doubt the bike shop would argue with you anyway, this was completely not your fault. I really only deal with two shops, the local Performance Bike in Fort Worth and Bicycles Inc in Fort Worth and Arlington but there is no way either shop would even attempt to sell me something I didn't order, they take great care of their customers and I'd hope most other shops would do the same.

However tempting, I would not use white privilege to fight the LBS.

I knew what you meant; that's a witness (no 'h'). Whiteness, which I've sometimes seen spelled as 'whitness', is a different thing altogether.

Just having fun...
