Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Inexpensive sunglasses

I was riding yesterday wearing my $25 Uvex glasses I got at Nashbar I think. In slow motion I saw a bee dive bombing towards me. He dropped his bomb above my right eye between the top of my glasses and the brim of my helmet. My instant reflex of course was to swat it and I ended up swatting my glasses off my face, down between my legs and my rear wheel crushed them. Rode the last hour home into the sun with my face stinging. Just one of many examples I have of why I never buy expensive ones. Any suggestions for a new pair? Something under $40 and I don't need multiple lenses, only smoked.

I think Tifosi can often be had for cheap and look good - check your LBS. I know at mine they're not locked up like the Oakleys. I also wouldn't be surprised if you could get Rudy Projects cheap on eBay; they're given out like candy at the local races.

I've got a cheap pair of Scattante from Performance that I was surprised how much I liked. They are on sale all the time in the $20-30 range.

Yeah, I was looking at the Scattante's with photochromatic lenses, but the reviews weren't that good.

I've been using the Bolle Axis glasses for a couple of years now. I think they can be had for less than 15 dollars from Amazon and are pretty good, IMHO.

Inexpensive? How about FREE ???

Donate a pint of blood at Virginia Blood Services here in Richmond, VA and get a free pair of sunglasses instead of a white t-shirt (that shrinks in the wash). I have two pairs of the sunglasses and also gave another pair away too.

I have broken, scratched or lost uncountable pairs of sunglasses. So I buy cheapies at gas stations.

Th e pair I wear now I spotted at a hardware store impulse rack. All of 6 bucks. Looks fine and protect my eyes.

Tifosi Stelvio Multi-Lens Eyewear - Performance Exclusive

Bike radar gave it a pretty good review:
Tifosi Stelvio review - BikeRadar

The nosepiece works well and makes adjusting height and position easy. I've seen other glasses that claim to have adjustable nosepieces, but they barely move and are pretty much worthless.

go to a local Walmart or Target and get a pair of Ironman glasses, which are made by Foster Grant. they're $14.99 at Walmart and $19.99 at Target, but Target carries them year round while Walmart only carries them in the summer. you'll spend $29.99 for the same exact glasses at Sports Authority, but there you will get a soft case to carry them in that you won't get at Walmart or Target. i've been using the same pair i got from Target for almost 10 years now, and everyone i know that rides can't believe they only cost less than $20. i know CVS sells them too, but i don't know for how much...

a little fyi, DON'T get them from Amazon, you'll pay a LOT more for them from Amazon than anywhere you can find them locally...

I have a pair of Tifosi and like them except when it is cold out. The vents cut into them blows too much and it causes my eyes to water and tear for at least the first couple miles. This ONLY happened when it is cool to cold out. I have a pair of old Nike glasses that sit so tight, they border on swim goggles and I do not get much if any wind into them and my eyes are fine. At the same time, I stopped at a light (I know blasphemy) and exhaled with the ones with a vent and they fogged over and pretty quickly cleared up. Sometimes I need to ride a little to get some wind blowing and then they clear. Not sure the 'sealed ' ones would clear so easily. Then again, air or breath doesn't get inside of them.

Do you prefer glasses with vents or without for cool/colder days or do you just go for vented glasses that have the vents better situated?

+1 on those. I run with Nike glasses that I bought from Costco for $35. I started using those when I lost my bike glasses. They served me well but I had a gift card from Performance that somebody gave me. I picked up those glasses for me and my son for around $19 each. I have really liked them and would recommend them.

I usually pick up cheap Natives. They move through styles quickly enough that there are often some in clearance for $30-$50 at REI, LLBean, etc. They're nice glasses too.

They fit. They're tough and don't seem to scratch easily. They give excellent wind protection and look rather good.

I've been wearing Tifosi Roubaix's and they've held up very well. ~ $30 and includes 3 pair of lenses. Not sure if they are bee-proof.

Walgreen's, gas stations, etc... Usually under $10. Or if you're feeling fancy, go the Target route.

I do like those. It gets very humid in the mornings here and fogging is a problem. But the review says they were best for wider heads, and mine is a smaller 6 7/8th. What do you think?

+1 on Tifosi.

Also +1 on Nashbar or Performance. In the past I've found their sunglasses were rebranded product from other well-known mfgrs.

I think you'll probably be fine. I have an average sized head and for reference, my previous helmet was a S/M and my current road and mountain bike helmets are both mediums and the glasses fit pretty well. They're snug, with no play at all (I did adjust the earpieces initially, though). Even on choppy pavement when my face and head are sweaty they still feel nice and secure.

My suggestion...Go to an industrial safety equipment store and look at their safety glasses. I've been using wrap around safety glasses for years. They look like cycling glasses and they work well. The glasses are amazingly cheap and come in dark, smoke (indoor/outdoor) and clear. Last time I got them they were about $5.00 for regular glasses and $7.00 for glasses with a small reading magnification area. Great for people like me who need reading glasses but not distance glasses. There's a specific name for this but I can't recall it. I am very very particular and if there was even the slightest imperfection in the lenses they would drive me nuts. I use the dark for sunny days and the smoke for rain and evening. If you can't find a safety equipment store locally, e-mail me and I'll look up the brand and the store web site.

I may go into town today and hit up Lowes. They have these Bolle Boa's in stock. Supposed to be anti-fog.

Shop Bolle Boa Safey Glasses at Lowes.com
