Raleigh man honoring wife with cross-country solo ride on tandem bike

RALEIGH, N.C. -

A Raleigh native is peddling 15,000 miles alone on a tandem bike across the country in honor of his late wife who lost her battle with cancer.

Art Whiting and his wife, Jessi Edwards, planned on biking to 48 capitals over an eight month period to fulfill a lifelong dream.

But she lost her battle with cancer in January 2014.

Whiting is now making the trip solo on the tandem bike he and Edwards planned to use on together.

"For the families of people who've lost their battle with cancer, there are too many empty seats," Whiting said. "We all miss loved ones every day, but especially at holidays and birthdays, at family dinners—and, in my case, on Jessi's Ride."

Whiting left Washington Feb. 25 after a brief celebration with members of Congress.

He then made his way south to Richmond, Virginia and arrived in Raleigh late Wednesday.

Whiting will leave Raleigh Thursday at 9:30 a.m....

Can't imagine a life without my partner in crime.

Is there a site for donations?

Perhaps he can 'pick up' a stoker from time to time.
A sign saying 'help wanted' or such can be both a conversation piece and a chance for a helper.
Been riding 40+ years with my stoker; am a lucky fellow!
Have a safe journey Art!
Pedal on!

Thanks for posting this. He will be within 100 miles of us next month. If our schedule allows it, we will go over to the state Capital and support him.

At first, I was afraid that he was riding a Raleigh tandem 15,000 miles. Wow!

Looks like he has chosen a much more capable bike. Sorry for the loss. I hope he has a safe ride with wonderful memories of the trip.

Cool story, thanks for posting. But why can't people - including journalists - spell "pedaling" correctly? Unless, of course, he's selling 15,000 miles by himself.

I took a quick look to see when he was coming close to the DFW Texas area and noticed he is going south from OK City to Austin in April. Ouch! The potential there is for big spring prairie headwinds the whole 390 miles. Big thunderstorms may also me an issue with May being the biggest tornado month (April is 3rd).

I am sure there are weather challenges through the whole route so I wish him luck.

It might have been well to consult WindMap in making the route!

I half-jokingly put a "sag wagon" sign on a single-speed tandem once when riding a double century. About twenty miles in, my partners (wife and sister-in-law on another tandem) and I came across a group of half-bikes who had kissed the tarmac. One of them gamely left his bike with the other disabled bikes and hopped aboard. Fun times were had by all.
