Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What do you think is the altitude of the average American? I'm guessing between 300-400 feet.

I'm an East Coast highlander at just under 1,000 feet.
So, if you are a “highlander” at 886’, I must be a “near highlander” at 604’.

You're not east of the Mississippi River.

The old-school thin sandwich bags (not the zip-lock type) worked well between sock and shoe on the front of the foot for cheap wind protection. If it’s raining, however, you get 2 mini swimming pools for your toes.

Lilly had slept poorly in the afternoon and had reason to be overtired. She also had her 8 week vaccinations yesterday and may be in discomfort. But damn lol, took me a couple minutes to process that while I rocked her.

It happened while changing her (wet) diaper, and afterward, she got tired so quickly that I knew she was going to pass TF out and not need much soothing to get there. I'll be ready to soothe as soon as she fusses on this baby monitor, but she's passed out now, and I'm thinking she might be like this for a while here,
I’m happy to be past those moments with my kids. However, I have a 1yo grandson who will probably take me down that road again.

Lowest temperature I have ridden in is 12 degrees. My body is usually fine, my toes are the only thing that start to bother me. Below 30 I usually wear two pairs of wool socks, toe covers over the shoes, wind resistance booties on top of that and then a neoprene bootie on top of that. Toes still get cold. I have yet to try chemical warmers. Luckily I think I missed the cold weather this week, will be 30 when I ride on Friday but 50 on Saturday and raining on Sunday. Garmin says it is time to do a fitness test so I think I’ll save that for Sunday on the trainer. It’s 3 mins at zone 5 and 10 mins at zone 4. I would love to do that outside but the roads not consistent enough so holding that power for that long would be tough. I want to do the fitness test right. I work the red eye back tonight and the flights home are looking good, have to grocery shop when I get home. If the wife lets me I would like to ride tomorrow even if it’s just 30 mins, if she gives me more time I might try to knock out the fitness test tomorrow depends on how tires I feel. I slept 7 hours this afternoon so we shall see.

Perl Izumi makes some nice lined ones. Or if you want to go super cheap, Aliexpress sells some nice unlined ones.

I have some sheet music for this that has been part of my repertoire since HS. Been dusting it off lately, cause 'tis the season and all that. The inter-melody passages (like the one at the beginning) are very cool.

Until his death in July of 2021, Jerry Granelli was the last surviving member of the original group led by Vince Guaraldi that played the the soundtrack for the iconic television broadcast A Charlie Brown Christmas back in 1965

I’ve done produce bags between foot and sock. Works okay. Also use full neoprene booties with chemical warmers when it’s below 30.

I've done the plastic bag trick. It only works until the sweat builds up. Once that happened my feet got cold fast. I use neoprene booties over toe covers with wool socks. I'm good for a couple hours. Wet feet are cold feet.

Do those sandwich bags still exist? I tend to prefer them but haven’t seen them in ages

Well the first of December was covered with snow
So was the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston.

My ear worm for the day. I’ll be ready for tomorrow. I might just have a listen to the complete album. It’s been awhile.

I am sleepy. Wheels are getting delayed until the 4th. Sigh.

I need to take the rear wheel off the madone to trek. I am not completely sure if anything is wrong with it, prefer them to check it out before I go all mad scientist on it and break something.

When I lived in the land of cold winters, I had plenty to contend with without bicycling. Firewood. Feeding the goats. Walks in the woods. Sledding. Walking that steep half mile hill to the house when it couldn’t be driven, even with 4wd or chains. A great life for a younger man, though my bil is still at it at 68.

My doctor and I are working at cutting my caffeine intake, as it is negatively affecting my gut. This morning I had no coffee at all unti 6. Unheard of. And only half a normal cup. Vamos a ver. The goal, this time, is to do it over the course of months rather than weeks. No need to be overzealous. In my 55 years a an addict I have tried to quit multiple times, and once succeeded for a two year stretch. Then an old friend came into the area and we went out for a cup of coffee. That was 35 years ago,
