Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I’ve been thinking about the different religions a lot lately, more specifically why do they lead to wars. I suppose it’s because in most other areas they do not have freedom religion, so one idea is forced onto a population. In some cases these ideas have extreme laws, which portions of the population believe to be unjust. Because I grew up in America I can’t comprehend what that must be like, and have a hard time understanding that. Not really sure where this post is going so i’ll stop here.

Some fun ("fun") reading would be around the fall of the Shah. Also the Peace of Augsburg. And the Treaty of Westphalia.

At least if you want to be a colossal nerd.

My wife and I are a day apart, and same year too. Kinda hard to ignore. I don’t remember a bad one either. But then I no longer have any memory, so that has to be taken into account:

You might pass the old homestead. Where are you, exactly? I hope you enjoyed the schiz out of it. They have some beautiful rainforest there.
Are you stopping in Progreso too. A stone’s throw.

The Maya Train did its inaugural run yesterday, and today is open for business. It’s due to pass by within sight of the front yard in ten minutes or so. I plan to go out and watch it pass. My wife happened to see it pass yesterday, while out hanging laundry.

That would be just terrible.

By the way, is the sizing capabilities on those recumbents adjustable?

Standard tourist travel. Started in Belize City and traveling west on the George Price highway to the Mayan temples.

You might also look up some stuff about John Calvin (after whom that Calvin was named). He's one of the religious influences that infects most of this country, even many avowed atheists. Calvinism and Puritanism affect almost our entire culture in ways that we have trouble internalizing. Including our laws. We just don't say that it's because of religion.

So as per my usual. I ordered parts and tools in the wrong order. Parts arrived 2 days ago and toolingcwill be here next week. Does that stop me?.... Of course not! Tore down F.B.B.s rear wheel. Added a .2mm shim to the axel. And reassembled. Now without preload there's a bit of rumble and drag. Smooth like glass once the caps are on it. I also added another .2mm shim between the outer bearing of the hub and the spacer for the freehub. Problem solved. Very nice and smooth now.

Speaking of puppies, personally I have sworn to never ever get a puppy again. At my age it’s like having a human baby, it’s overwhelming, just too much trying to keep up with the little terror. If they’re not chewing up your stuff they’re throwing up on it or peeing anyplace they want. There is a very good reason why child-rearing is best done when you’re young. Play at your own risk, but be warned, your mileage will not vary much just because you are “only” in your 60s.

That was the great thing about adopting retired racing Greyhounds - they're already grown up. Sure, they take a little time to get used to living in a house, and if you have a non-Greyhound dog they take a while to learn each others "language", but not having to go through puppy adolescence, where they hump everything and bite and jump?* That was nice.

* We got our Golden as a puppy. At about 6 months, he was going through adolescence, and one day Mrs. GJ called me practically in tears, saying maybe we'd made a mistake getting Rhyo. He was uncontrollable! He was humping everything and biting and jumping up! It was like he was POSSESSED!!!! I said, "All those puppy books you bought - did you actually READ THEM? This is totally normal. You need to be firm and let him know you won't put up with that ****, and he'll love you for it."

And we did, and he did.
