Never owned or driven a car, neither had my wife... I'm 52.. Sometimes was a bit too difficult with two kids , but ..anyway.. I'm planning on getting my driving license...

Wow that's an impressive run. Are you nervous about operating a motor vehicle? It seems like that would be intimidating late in life, particularly big city driving. Maybe even freeway.

I guess it would depend where you live. Is public transportation handy?

I'm from super rural Indiana so I definitely have driven A LOT but I'm car free in Boston now. Last year I drove ~65 miles- 50 to move here from Rhode Island and 15 doing a few loops when I moved across town.

I didn't get a drivers license until I was 30 but I had a motorcycle permit in my 20's. Between 33 and 53 I drove all over the country. Now I am mostly car free. If I drive once a year that is a lot. I have stretches where I don't drive for 5 years straight. I go into the Enterprise Rental office with sweaty palms and I wonder if I've forgotten how to even get it out of the parking lot but it all comes back by the time I push the START button on the dash. Learning to drive after as long as the o.p. was idle doesn't sound like the best idea ever. I hope they thought better of it.

Wow! How did you make that? Is public transportation well prepared for everything in your area?

I would love to hear more about your history!

How do you get groceries or go to work? I’m asking because I’m intrigued. Not being silly either. I would love to make time “slow down” and getting back to basics is how you do it.

Public transportation is well prepared for most things in Portland, OR. Ironically, the 20 years I was a car owner were spent in NYC. I could not actually use the car to commute to work there, that would have been insanity. It was used only on weekends for shopping etc. Presently I have a large Fred Meyer to the West (.75mi) and a much smaller Safeway to the East (.5mi). I have a Bob Yak trailer for weekend shopping. Backpacks for mid-week pickups. I recently bought a Mongoose Envoy and it can carry almost as much as the trailer when both panniers are attached. We have a foot of (melting) snow on the ground (a very rare occurrence) so I had to walk to the FM and back yesterday.
