Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Been coming in a little bit early all week so I just hit 40 hours at 3. Boss says no overtime in these trying times, so I'm just going to bite the bullet, make a sacrifice for the company, and head home 30 minutes early.

Hey all! Haven't been on BF for a while. How are we all doing? Have I missed anything? Business as usual right?

Well, stap my vitals! Queens has gotten all hoity toity and literate since I left the City.

"Futuristic" seems to belong to the non-movement sense. How do you feel about that dichotomy?

Who owns a word, anyway? Or a movement? Probably a bad discussion to have here, but it’s not simple to decide. It’s probably not possible to decide.

^^^^This pic reminded me
The round
the world touring cyclist who passed through here in Jan. Is hung up 52 km into C.R., from Nicaragua. Seems he can stay as long as need be. A new police checkpoint out front, pulling Nicas and sending them back. Crocks in the river out back. Police checkpoints are common in these parts.

I get the humor, but I think Queens could always hold its own.

I'm all good with futuristic and other variations, but I never liked that a website called "Futurism.com" has nothing to do with, well, Futurism. And, you know, I would be doing a disservice to the Futurists if I didn't try to pick a fight over it...

Hey Heathpack , I know you said you were buying a blood orange tree this week.

Are you sure you didn't pick up a pedantry by mistake?

Applying a common suffix (or set thereof) to a common word and then asserting ownership of the term is... not likely to turn out well.

I tend to agree, but it seems to happen a lot. All the lame complaints these days about appropriation...

But hey, let's start a website about everything related to fasces, throw on the same suffix, and see how it goes...

It does, and I dismiss most of those as well. And "fasc-" is nowhere near as common as "future". And "fascism" holds a special and highly-negative connotation for most people. A better example would be, say, if Rubik's Cube enthusiasts started a club called "Cubists" and adherents of Cubism got upset. Dadaists, on the other hand, would have a point, since "dada" is not usually used, at least by people older than, say, 2.

As for appropriation, that's best not discussed here. I keep stopping myself from typing more.

As a physician, I managed to deal with fascicles and even full blown fascia without the taint rubbing off on me.

If you are unfamiliar with "Hobart's Funnies," they were a series of modifications to some tanks that a British general came up with during World War II to provide combat engineering capabilities to armored units to help break out from the beaches of Normandy on D-Day and thereafter.

One of these was a modification of the Churchill tank that included it carrying a large bundle of sticks, called a fascine. This bundle of sticks, or bundle of fasces if you like, could be dropped into a ditch to provide a way for other tanks to drive across it, defeating the ditch as an anti-tank obstacle. Hence the ironically poetic notion that fascist tanks helped defeat the Nazis during World War II.

A "fascist" tank.
