Best Front Der for Road Triple ? ?
My triple experience is limited to ATB's so I have no data on road der's that actually work. This is a Tiagra 30/42/52 triple w/ Tiagra brifter shift. Currently the der is a Sora (not sure if that was original or not since the rest is Tiagra) and I have to say that I cannot complain about the performance. I mean, Shimano, right? But maybe there is better and the ebay market on der's is not that price stupid so moving up would not be any real outlay. Shimano of course but I don't know which groups have trip capable ders.
Any thots?

Honestly FD aren't real complicated pieces, move a little and push and pull against the chain. Better performance will come with ramps/pins on chainrings (which you already probably have) and shifters, and upgrading shifters isn't cheap. If you really want to upgrade 105 or Ultegra came in triples. Or even moving up to Tiagra.
Pretty common to drop the FD a level down on bikes. As I said it's not complicated and gets used less often then the RD and dropping a level hits a lower price point.

It seems “modern” triples are specifically designed for the specific system they’re designed for. In other words, the specific tooth counts and such.

I agree. If it works fine, the only other question is if it's cool enough for the bike. It's very important on some bikes to have the coolest possible derailleurs, but on others, Sora/Tiagra is just fine.

You can get fairly out of control with mix and match of components as long as the combination is era constant, 9 and 10 speed as an example, This is a indexed 9 speed that shifts crisp and clean through all the ranges. Built from Campy Racing -T crank and front mech, 49-39-28 tooth T.A. pinned rings, SRAM PG-990 11-34 tooth cassette, Shimano XT RD-M772 9 speed rear mech, and Dura-Ace SL-BS77 double/triple 9-speed bar end shifters.
The secret to success with this stuff is lots of research and very careful setup.

I had a Sora FD break on a 2002 Specialized Allez, and replaced it with an Ultegra. I had a 105 FD break on my 2007 Roubaix and replaced it with an Ultegra. Both were triples. Both worked fine with the Ultegras, but I can't say it was a big, or any, improvement. They just both work better than the broken ones. If it breaks, replace it. If not, why mess with it?

I’m not constrained by Shimano, and really like how the Campy Racing-T FD’s shift on my Sachs Ergo setups.

Getting another Tiagra would solve all issues, including the OCD on the mismatch.
Modern Shimano triple FD's are intended to be somewhat specific.
You have the "standard" triple, so I'd get an FD meant for it. If it's 9sp, get the Tiagra or the 105, and don't look back.
Splurge on the Ultegra if you want.

So the thing is on a Masi Nuova Strada aluminum/carbon from early 2000's. No big shakes about some minor parts since it's in fairly nice condition overall and I picked it up to give to my brother.
I'll prolly just find a Tiagra triple der and go with that. No need to get crazy with it AFAIC. It just needs to work. Tiagra is fine.
I'm not a mixnmatch guy - I have Shimano on everything cuz nothing has ever worked better for me. OK that's a lie, the Colnago is all SR but otherwise ...........

Tiagra/Sora FDs with the adjuster screws facing outwards on the arms are known to break. The rear arm has a tab that holds the spring which breaks off.
Shimano triple FDs should be matched to the correct big/middle rings. What is especially important is the gap between the middle and big ring. Deviating too much can lead to poor shifting or the cage rubbing on chainrings.

On approx "equally" spaced, like yours, triple FDs work best.
Double FDs seem to do better if the tooth count differences are uneven, like the 52x44x28 I have on one bike

On the trip thing I got a Tiagra and it works just fine. The bro is super happy with the bike and that was all that counted in the long run anyway
