bike buying advice

Hi, I am currently looking at buying a hybrid or road bike as my main source of transportation around my college town next year. I am looking to buy used and am not wanting to spend more than $400. With that said, some of the bikes the hybrid bikes that I have been finding on craigslist have been slightly older. Two bikes that I have been looking at have been a 2000 giant cypress and a 2000 cannondale h300. Should the slightly older year on these bikes prevent me from buying them? Am I going to be missing out on any new bike technology or features that are now availible, but weren't 8 years ago? Thank you for your help!

1) There is likely a local bike club near you. They are experts on how to bike in your area. Their wisdom could save your life, time and money.
2) Try a local shop for advice.
3) If you see someone on a bike, ask them, I bet they give you alot of advice.
4) Consider a single speed bike, and/or a folding bike. They may be the correct tool for the job.
5) Search bikeforums, your questions have been gone over hundreds of times before.

slightly older year - Ask on the vintage board

"College town" are the magic words. Get a POS. That way you won't feel so bad when it gets stolen.

It might be clever to actually have a decent bike but "cloak" it under some bad paint, grease, and dirt.
