My wife sometimes comments that a purchase here and there seem unnecessary, but she has also encouraged my hobby. When we got a second home, she said I ought to have the necessary tools in both places, so I have almost completely duplicated tool sets.

Mine has asked why I havent bought a bike in a while if it's been some time since my last buy.
A spouse supporting or encouraging a hobby has nothing to do with whether costs are tracked or not.

I don't record costs. I only save receipts until the warranty is expired. This is a hobby. It costs me something, like all my hobbies. I make spread sheets for neither the costs nor the joy.

But one important point: I do expect this to cost me. I don't try to break even or make money. This is for my enjoyment and my health. It's worth it.

Absolutely agree. I can completely understand some folks not being able to have fun and track spending. It just wouldn't work.

Having dealt with spreadsheets for 30 years, it's kinda natural for me, and not a burden as it might easily be for someone else. I keep track of spending primarily as a method to look over my own shoulder a little bit. Not second guessing, per se, but to keep things in some sort of monetary sanity that was missing when I started having more than one bicycle.
