Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I did the 100 miler last year. It was fantastic weather for the first 85 miles and pouring rain horribly the last 15 miles.

I was also dying the last 5-10 miles, but a woman in our group (who had rainbow stripes on her sleeves and shorts, the real deal!) was with my group and she pulled my sorry ass the last 5 miles.

If you carbo-load the day before, you should be able to get away with one donut per rest stop (assuming that they're reasonably spaced, like 15 miles apart) and with a goo packet between each rest stop.

Speaking of eating - any of yous have any tips on maintaining good energy levels while operating at a caloric deficit? Most of the time I've felt pretty good, but lately I've been feeling like I'm dragging a bit. Just poking around the interwebs says that I should do things like ensure that my iron intake is up to snuff, and I'm also wondering if my hydration levels are poor with warmer weather finally hitting MN. Any other ideas?

I've got nothing helpful.

I would be very surprised if you were iron deficient or dehydrated and the little I know about you is inconsistent with an unhealthy diet. Supplementation of micronutrients is a rabbit hole that's hardly worth going down, except for the placebo effect, in my opinion.

I live in a caloric deficit, according to my waist bands, and it doesn't bother me except at the end of a strenuous day on the water when I forget, or don't have time, to eat and become irritable and lethargic. It's dramatic, other people can tell there's something wrong with me, and if that's what you're experiencing—wow, that's really bad.

I slosh down fancy Japanese organic green tea all afternoon at work. Gives me a nice, gentle, buzz and keeps my pee dilute.

It's a little spendy, but eating bike/training specific stuff is what keeps me moving. My diet is more "The Whey" from MyProtein.com, Pure Clean Beets, Bloks, gels, fruit and nuts, salad with some type of protein, usually turkey, and of course, coffee.

Thanks. I actually talk donuts more than I eat them. My diet certainly could be better, I think that could be said for most, but the vast majority of my meals are prepared and cooked at home (and not of the frozen pizza variety) and include a decent amount of variety. And no, not getting hangry, just feeling like I'm dragging a little and can't always turn it up as much as I'd like. The numbers on the bike don't actually bear this out, though; my last solo ride was pretty damn decent - ~62 miles (a good portion of that within the stop-and-go city limits) with ~3000' at ~18.4 mph. But I'm just not feeling... snappy. *shrug* I like feeling snappy.

At this point in my life, I am mainly composed of peanuts and whey protein and the brown color comes from good (ethically harvested) chocolate.

My salads have been a little flimsy, lately. I got kinda tired of my avocado, black/pinto beans, hard-boiled egg and lately have been doing goat cheese, dried cranberries, nuts, etc. Good, but not as substantial. Some beet would kick it up a notch.

And now that I think about it, my nut snacking has been non-existent lately - I usually have almonds and stuff on hand, but haven't for a few weeks.

Possibly, but they have really good tomato pie at mile 80 (at French Creek State Park), almost as good as Sarcone's. And I ate plenty of it.

Came across a youtube channel where the creator superimposes celebrity faces on someone that's doing an impression of said celebrity. I don't have time to look through right now, but this Bill Hader/Arnold Schwarzenegger is freaky good -
