Yeah, chrome is porous, so without a regular protective coating on it moisture gets to the steel underneath and oxidisation lifts the chrome.

why are bikes all black? i hate it.
i finally chosed a new folder bike out of many candidate. spend weeks analizing and comparing specs and creating spreadsheets and warching youtube videos. then i thought all the hardwork paid off... found the best bike for me. then found out it only comes with one color: all black. yuck.
even seatpost and stem and crank are black. literally it will disappear in front of a dark wall.

One is royal blue, the other is metallic orange. Life is too short to be plain.
(I drive a black truck, but don't want a black bike lol)

I was in the navy so I have a soft spot for haze gray and being underway. Both our motor vehicles are gray too. I still kinda like my old bike's silver/navy blue color scheme though:

Steel is real
I like that better, still matches the hoods and Brooks seats are a quality item.

Black is blah. Black is not a designer color. Black parts are about eliminating the cost of that worker who used to polish the silver components by hand at the end of the line.
My current pride and joy has a bright green metallic powder coat frame, chrome fork and handlebar, and a mix of silver and anodized blue components. With a few black bits left over from the previous owner that I'm working on replacing.
Of course, tires should be black, on their tread anyway. Vinyl records too. Anything else is a gimmick.

Olive Green and silver
1995 Trek 800 Sport, aka the FRANKEN-TREK! Darn near everything on it came from thrift stores, second hand ebay, or craigslist. Started as a Goodwill $30 purchase in Dec, 2013. More than 4000 logged commute miles later, and still terrorizing the roads.

Not crazy about matte finishes either. As far as I know you can't apply any kind of wax to them, so no protection for the paint from the elements or UV light.

Yeah, I'm not sure why the colour was all the rage a few years ago. I've been using a Pledge product (that I likely read about here somewhere) to keep the bike clean. But if I'd had my choice, I would have picked a 'regular' colour biked.

This gives me hope for my 2002 Trek 4900 pictured above which will soon be shedding its front derailleur, but still: what color is yours?

I liked the colour of my Toyota Camry Hybrid (Ruby Red), I had my custom bike painted the same colour.
I also have a orange Brompton and a blue-grey Rivendell.
