Cracked Carbon Post :(
I've been riding an LP Composites carbon seatpost for 7 1/2 years, and I guess it finally decided to give up the ghost. While adjusting its height after I mounted a new saddle on it yesterday, I noticed a couple cracks running up the back side of it. One is about 4 inches long, and the other is further up and about 3/4" long. The longer one is what really bothers me since I can feel how clean a crack it is as I run my fingernail against it.

When carbon cracks, it usually goes pretty quick after that, so I ordered a Thomson Elite last night. Any reason to buy new parts is a good reason, but especially when my wife also thinks its a good idea.

yeah, um, doesn't carbon usually make heaver components and lighter frames? any thompson should be light and also some of the strongest crap you can buy.

Yeah, my carbon post weighs 236 grams @ 350mm length, and the Thomson is listed as 223 grams @ 367mm. If my carbon post lasted as long as it did, the Thomson should last just about forever.

If it's weight you're after, the Thompson Masterpiece is touted as being lighter while keeping the strength. Since that was a fairly expensive weight loss, I went with the Elite, too. Reason? The stock post had so much set back, I couldn't get the seat adjusted quite right. I guess I just have non standard proportions, and have been paying for it ever since I started riding.

Clean cracks are important.
