In this case, "under control" simply means that you have it all neatly inventoried. So that means that you get to keep your cycling gear obsession. Good job!

Wow, I just keep my stuff organized in boxes and on hangers but I have no idea what I own, lol. I do count how many bikes I own anytime I start thinking about n plus 1 . . . .

It occurred to me last week that I have eight cranksets for three bikes.

Two need to be prepped for sale, another needs to be stripped of resuable parts and the rest recycled.

That leaves five. For three bikes. (Which doesn't count the cracked frame that's wall art.)

Don't get me started on my supply of cassettes, chains, brake pads, cables, and cable housing. Tires are temporarily under control. Although I have three separate sets for my Portland (Road, cross, studded snows) not counting spares for each set.

Of course, this is all in a studio apartment that's a wee bit smaller than the typical two-car garage.

I'm seriously thinking about cutting my material manifestation of cycling by quite a bit. There are five bikes, three frames, four wheel-sets, seven saddles, three seat posts, six crank-sets, two ultegra brake sets, three ultegra 9-speed derailleurs and four sets of handlebars that are marked as expendable. I'm hopeful that if I can pull this off, the cuts can go even deeper. We'll see how it goes in the next few weeks (I'm headed to Italy for two weeks with plans to visit Italian frame builders).


BTW, I blame Retro Grouch for his thread about if you only could have one bike, which would it be?

I've been considering the idea of selling off a few bikes and some redundant or obsolete components in order to help make room for and help pay for a new bike I am planning to build soon. That's about as close to controlling my obsession as I have any interest in considering.

Funny you should ask. Yes I do, and it's one of the two that one of these days I have to get around to degreasing to sell.

Vintage 2007, Sora FC-3304, Octalink, 175mm arms, currently with a 39-tooth middle ring, includes the original 42-t, and an English-thread Octalink BB to go with it. Crankarms show wear and tear--shoe scuffs, lots of scratches, a couple of scrapes--it was my knockaround bike, but mechanically everything is shipshape.

All of my 8-speed stuff is available, BTW. Ultegra-level R-500 levers (Triple left and 8-speed right. Look ma! No Sora thumb button!), a KMC X8.93 chain (NIB), bunch of KMC master links (NIB), 12-28 and 13-23 cassettes. That 13-23 is a sweetheart in the flatlands. Includes the 16t cog.

I haven't been under control at all this week. Been buying from cables to crankset and cycling clothes. I think I'm about done buying if I haven't forgotten anything. Now I have to wait for it to show up and put it to use.

Personally I have stopped buying stuff, and am in the process of gettng rid of what I have - assorted bits of used groupsets, you know the sort of thing - to a local bike charity. It has finally dawned on me that with the exception of the consumables - tubes, tyres, brakepads - I'm never going to use it all and it's just taking up space.

I even sold a bike the other week, reducing the total to four. Still have far more cycle clothing than I strictly need, but it'll all get worn - and worn out - in time, so that's not an issue.

I've got a big pile of clothing spilling out of an army duffel in my den. It's disgusting, really. I use the same stuff for biking, hiking, climbing, etc. Come to think of it, I wear the same stuff to work and in the garden. It's great being a guy.

My cycling includes a wide range of activities with a wide range of cycling enthusiasts. I've been enjoying the classic & vintage cycling subculture during the last 5 years. Most of my surplus components are 1978 to 1990 vintage parts. I've enjoyed restoring some rare Treks, including a 1978 TX 900 and a 1983 970. Ironically, my Serotta is a superior long distance bike and my Simoncini Cyclocross Special is a unusual model, so these two bikes have become "keepers". I've also restored a Trek 400 for my son and a Miyata 615 for my daughter. Vintage bikes are admired, fun to ride and economic to restore.

I also like having the modern Carbon bikes for group rides with the faster recreational riders.

I could do all of my cycling on my carbon Cyclocross bike. It has a 50, 39 & 26t triple. It can accept a 11-32 cassette. It will take racks and can be used as a light touring bike. With 700x38 Cyclocross tires, it can ride most of the singletrack in the Midwest. It also can be equipped with light 700x25 racing tires and a 11-23 cassette and used as a fast Road bike. In fact, my fastest solo century was on this bike.

In 15 years, I might get down to one or two bikes. But not yet.

My bikes follow a cyclic pattern. I have 10 ready to ride bikes, one build, and a trike = 12 total. That is one for the 12 month cycle.
I have enough vests, jackets, rain gear, jerseys, tights, shoes, boots, and shorts for my lifetime. I cannot overlook a sale on jerseys, and keep adding shoes despite selling several. I've gotten three pairs of shoes in size 46 this year with my used bike purchases. I also buy any decent 700c wheelset being sold for $100 or less.
My flipping hobby has made sure my basement is full of cables, tubes, tires, and spare parts.

It's great to see others make me look amateur.
