Ripley'S Believe It or Not!!
Sunday morning early ride no one on the highway except a black Camry and me.I'm on the RT 36 bridge near Sandy Hook NJ.Sun is out, blue sky, a little wind.I'm out of the saddle climbing up the bridge.A car pulls over in front of me on a diagonal leaving about 2 feet between auto and curb.Window comes down women yells she almost hit me you shouldn't be in the road get on the sidewalk!I'm in a clearly marked designated bicycle lane.I ride by the nutcase like she is a another obstacle in the road. What is your believe it or not?

Yep, people are funny. Generally though, I rarely have issues. With cycling taking off, people are getting more used to seeing us. I was slapped in the butt during a climb a few years ago. That was from a young gal in a car. Also had a redneck in an opposing pickup throw an apple at me. Hit me right on the knee. No damage but the next two hours was sticky due to splatter.

You should feel sorry for her.
Everyday, every place she goes, everybody she meets is reflecting her negative attitude back at her. You and I just have the very few folks like her to contend with.

Going which way? The entrance and exit that go down to Highlands can be a bit funky. But anyway, if she had enough time and energy to stop to yell at you, she's doing better than I am. Did she end with "BENNY GO HOME!"?
Did you ride on the Hook? It's a great place to go for a ride on a summer weekday. Wouldn't touch it on the weekend, except in early spring or fall. Do you know the condition of the bike path? My son was doing some work there a few weeks ago, the pictures he brought back didn't look too good.

The bike path is ok except one has to dismount 4 times ,2 going 2 coming, due to it being washed away.Early spring it was more like 10 dismounts. The road paving project is completed.Too bad they didn't install a bike lane for real roadies inside the park..The beaches are open with life guards. One may fish, wind surf, bike, hike and stare at birds. There are water fountains but no bathrooms, porta johns. The snack bar, changing areas and inside showers are closed. But with every visit one sees another project completed.Keep in mind the lowest bidder was awarded the contract.

We are introducing San Diego motorists and cyclists to sharrows. Some members of each group still don't get it.

I know it's out of the character of the first post, but this is my "Believe it or not!":
Late Saturday night, riding in Cold Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains on a double century. A big black SUV pulls behind us and follows us for a spell.
At some point, it pulls next to us. The passenger window opens and a guy pokes his head out of the window:
"Hey ... if you don't mind us asking ... what the HELL are you doing out here so late at night?"
Easiest question of the day, of course.
"We're riding a double century ... 200 miles in a day!"
He relays the message to the other occupants, then pokes his head out of the same window, shaking his fist.
"You guys rock!"

Interesting concept. Wondering how that will work out. When I was cycling in San Diego I used to take lots of advantage of the hidden bike trails all over the town. I got a map from the bike shop in the downtown "Gaslamp district" (if it's still there). You can't go everywhere on them but they'll take you around a lot of the traffic.

I was stationed at Sandy Hook Coast Guard Station in the early seventies ---- great area, There was a little sub shop just over the bridge -- many sub runs from the barracks.

I was in a group of about 10 cyclists heading up a local canyon. Near the bottom is a little league field and the little darlings were out ther practicing. Suddenly one 12 or 13 year old kid starts running toward us screaming "you're crazy to ride on the road, you're crazy to ride on the road!!" Wasn't sure what to think of that.
