Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Skinny runners, fat cyclists

You hardly ever come across regular runners that are fat or have guts, but many regular cyclists are out of shape. Why?

Because running while fat is hard on the knees, whereas cycling isn't? Also hard on the soles of the feet, and joints in general.

Plus fat people are more jolly, and running is for miserable people.

Running is a different exercise than cycling.

I cant run worth anything. I hate it. I can cycle though.

PS- i bet youd get responses in the Clydesdale/Athena area of the forum....from the people you are talking about.

This is very true. I started as a runner, but never enjoyed it the way I love cycling. Probably because I wasn't any good.

I should add that while I'm not overweight I'm certainly not in fantastic shape and do have a slight gut myself. I was quite overweight when I started running in my late teens though, and don't know if I would have achieved the same kind of weight loss by cycling.

The better question might be do you ever come across a fixie rider who is fat?

Because fixie riders, like runners, can never coast.

Right. How often do you hear about runners running to a bakery, eating a bunch of brownies, and then running home? You'll see that ride burned into the Strava heatmap in this neck of the woods.

Not to mention the "bikes and pints" rides, again, not something I associate with runners typically.

Most cyclists overestimate the calories they burn, and also underestimate our body's ability to sabotage our effort to lose weight. If I use the Garmin's calories burned numbers from my rides (from actual power meter no less) and 3500 calories equals one pound of fat, I should weigh about less than 0, like -200 lbs.

Having rode a fixie and ran a bunch, they're really not very alike. You can ride as slow as you like on a bike, you can only dial the intensity down so much when you run. No matter how slowly you run, you're still constantly jumping from one leg to the other.

Because cycling is easy.

I see plenty of large walker/joggers, but the runners I know are thin.

I also see cyclings equivalent of walker/joggers fairly often. Very similar build.

IMO 12 minute miles isn't running, and 15mph isn't cycling.

Certainly agree they are not that much alike, but on a bike with a freewheel, it is physically possible to ride someplace without burning any more calories than you would sitting on a couch. Can't do that running or on a fixie, even if the entire route is downhill.

This is part of why the Pronto bikeshare program isn't working out, people who use bikeshare rather than their own bike tend to ride them downhill only in Seattle, and then they mostly coast.

Depends on the grade.

On flat ground or downhill, agree.

They also can't drop into the granny gear to gerbil their way up the hills either.

I don't know.

The closest I've come to a runner's high without actually running is on a fixed-gear bike.

Yeah, intensity has to be there. Can't really soft pedal and expect the same result but still, legs are moving constantly.

Just musing.
