Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I've got a tire question (sorry BillyD )

For my birthday my folks got me a set of new Rene Herse 584x38 tires in the "standard" casing thickness. Currently I'm running the same model but in their super supple "extralight" casing front and rear. The rear is going to need to be replaced sometime soon but the front is still in great shape.

I know that there's a couple of options for changing out worn rear tires, either (1) putting the new on the front and moving the old front to the rear, or just (2) replacing the rear tire and leaving the front alone.

Assuming the extralight version is the "better/faster" tire compared to the standard, would you go with option (1) or (2)?

I would do Option 2 and put the heavier casing on the rear where it might do more good w/r/t punctures. Normally, it's advised that you put the new tire up front, but I don't think it's a huge deal. That said, the main reason that I leave my front tire in place is because I'm tubeless and I don't want the extra work of draining and refilling the sealant.

I am a strong advocate of putting new tire on front and moving front to back. But now that I am running 23F 25R the system won’t work. WTF am I going to do with these 23mm tires? Send them back to the 2000’s??

I learned that that wasn't the method for me when I bought the Conti Attack/Force (22mm/24mm) twin pack ten years ago. Supposedly the thicker tread on the Force would mean that they'd wear out at roughly the same time. Yeah, that was a lie - I had a damn near new Attack left when the Force was no longer with me.

I both responded to and contributed to the fear/expectation of a coming consumables shortage. I read what was posted above, and even though all my bikes have been recabled, re-tired, and re-chained within the last 1200 miles, I decided I should check and see. I figured the Canyon's 28mm GP5000s might be the most popular, and sure enough the first 2 places I looked were out of stock! So I went a little crazy, but at least I'll have cables, chains, and tires when everyone else is riding on their rims and Flintstoning because their chains broke.

If it gets that bad, I’ll be happy just staring at my breakaway.

Do you buy these when they are on sale? Or do you just walk into your LBS and say give me all your 10 spd chains? That’s a lot of chains.

I bought 5 last year on sale from ScamBay. This is a 2-3 year supply. Note I do run 10s on several bikes.

Maybe I should change my screen name to ChainMogul?

This is the real reason that datlas hasn't converted to Di2 - he couldn't bear to not get his money's worth out of these chains!

I'm getting low on proper 26er MTB tyres. I may have to slap some commuter slicks on the Bridgestone so I can use the knobbies on a slightly funner bike.

Ah yeah that's a good point.

I'd probably be more concerned about getting the tire in the best condition on the front if I lived somewhere hillier.

I ordered a 6600 chain last Thursday and it showed up today. Many sites had the 6701.
I still need a chain for the Campagnolo 10 speed bike. I'd like something in the Chorus range but I'm not familiar with the stuff , really. Saw Record chains for $60.

I use KMC's for everything. Saves worrying about Campagnolo vs Shimano.

I thought about that, or Wipperman. Is the KMC durable? I've found the Campagnolo chains to be durable but hard to work with if you don't have their tool. I guess I could use a quick link.

I was thinking I haven't replaced the chain on the Gunnar since before 2012, but it hasn't had a lot of miles since I got the other bike.
