I guess I have a reputation - Peugeot stuff
I guess I've got a good reputation with the LBS owner here in town. 'On my way to my daughter's high school double header today I get a text from my wife to call some lady about a bike. I guess she had called and spoken to my wife on Friday and told her the bike shop owner told her to call me about her old bike. Curiosity always gets the best of me but I also don't need another bike - shoot, I probably need to divest myself of some for sure.
After the second game I gave her a call. Really nice lady probably close to 70 yo. She said she had just ordered a new bike because she just couldn't get her leg over the top tube of her old men's bike. She said she asked the shop owner if he wanted her old one on trade, and he said "no, but call this guy, he likes old Peugeot's." "Crap," I think to myself, "now, I gotta go look at it." A little over an hour later I pull into her driveway. The bike ends up being a lowly UO9 - 1980 from what I can tell. But, a quick glance shows there's potential. Get rid of the steel wheels. Normandy high flange hubs (dated 1980), long cage Simplex rear derailleur. Stronglight crank. I'll change out the steel seatpost too.
At 57 cm it's a tad too tall but I have a friend who wants to start commuting to work and this could be a good fit for him. Plenty of seat stay length for panniers and fenders should fit fine.
I didn't need another bike, especially a lower end model - but I have one. Peugeot total is now at 6.

Those French bikes seem to multiply somehow. I have a 79 uo10 that I might try to make a gravel bike out of. It's *so* heavy tho!

Yep, but still less than my 87 Trek 800 Antelope that I use for yard sales occasionally. That thing is a tank

I'm thinking of making my mid 70s PR 10 into a gravel bike. I just picked up some 700 x 38c tires and I have a wheelset with superchampion 58 rims and tipo hubs that would look spiffy on the bike. I'll run some decent lower gears with a stronglight 99 double (34/46).

Nice score. I'd love to find a UO 9/UO 10 like this in my size. I think the only difference between the 2 was that the UO 10 came with better wheels (rigida alloy rims). That 99 is a nice crank. You might want to sell it separately from the bike.

Peugeot always had great-looking graphics and a nice compromise all-rounder geometry with ample tire clearance. My son just put 700Cx35(!) tires on my old 1980 PKN-10, something I cannot do with my Bianchi of about the same vintage.

The nice thing is it was free. He doesn't do it very often. Usually just calls me and says "I have an old Gitane, mixte, parts, etc if you're interested". Since it was French he probably decided he was safe giving her my number. Between 6 Pugs, 3 Gitane's and 2 Vitus 979 he knows my French tendencies when it comes to bikes. Granted 4 of the Pugs are lower end but they are so comfortable to ride when I'm not in a hard training mode

So, here's a question on the Stronglight 99 - does it take a separate extractor to pull the cranks like the 93?
