Hamilton closed :(

Due to rock / debris blocking the road. Rode there today to find that it's closed after the first 5 miles or so. Bummed. I asked up top when they think it's gonna re-open. They said 3-4 weeks. Just heads up.

Were there workers there telling you turn back? Or just cones / signs?

Until it reopens, (very steep) Quimby Road will take you to above the closure.

Workers were there. Oh that's good to know! Wasn't sure where Quimby merges. I like me some walls I'll check it out next time.

A few years back PCH was closed at Mugu Rock, and beyond, due to rock and mudslides. It was nearly 3 months before it was fully re-opened.

I feel your pain!

Well I was at Hamilton yesterday! I took your advice and rode up Quimby. I wasn't aware it merges Hamilton AFTER the closed bit. Sure does. What an amazing ride. Gonna be doing this climb often!

Enjoy! Mt. Hamilton was one of my favorites when I lived in the SF Bay area--not only from the bay side but from the Mines Rd/San Antonio Valley side as well. Have you ridden Sierra Rd as well? Fantastic views from there too--especially this time of year, when the hills are getting intensely green.

Not related to Hamilton, but another road closure, does anyone know the current status of Palomares?

Quick Google doesn't come up with any recent results, most recent is Feb, road still closed at that time.

I have JUST made a route including Hamilton and Sierra on Strava. I'll be checking it out for sure. I think I'll take it to Livermore / Pleasanton and make a loop there.

That is a great loop! My buds and I used to do that loop, but starting in Pleasanton. You might check on Calaveras Rd, though. When I lived in the area a few years ago they had just started to do work on the dam and so had parts of it blocked off. That all might be over, though. Also, the rains--I'm not sure if there are closures; so you might check on that. You will love this ride!!

Yes, as of a few days ago, even lower Calaveras (from Piedmont) is closed due to storm damage.

Palomares was reopened as of last Thursday, with one way traffic control for a brief stretch at mile marker 8.73. I haven't heard any changes since then.

ok thanks!

Didn't even know Redwood had a lane closure, I'll have to figure out where these are along the road, based on the mile markers given.

Technically when there's a road-block, there's a road-block, so "open to bikes" is open to interpretation I guess.

In this case you can get by the slide easily. It only consumes 1 1/3 lanes and I didn't have to get off the bike. You can always double check whether roads are passable by looking at the Strava segment. A quick check shows 21 riders went by it on Sunday.

Haven't done the bigger loop yet but I climbed Sierra and down Calaveras! Great ride man. Awesome views on both sides. I even took my gf there the following weekend for hiking. Thanks for the suggestion again!

Yes! Isn't that a gorgeous ride??? The views are really spectacular and I also liked how there was such little traffic on Sierra Rd (at least every time I rode it--seemed so to me). I'm glad you enjoyed the ride!

Are there any other kinds of barriers or fencing further back or ahead of the actual slide? I'm just wondering if cars are also driving through if there are no additional deterrents.

The situation on Mt Hamilton Road has changed. There is major excavation work to rebuild the foundation, and that includes full removal of the road. A friend rode it this weekend (April 9), and was able to tip-toe by the excavation work, but probably only because workers weren't there. Obviously this construction is WIP, so hopefully within a month the road may be open again. If you're bold, go for it.

Tour of California is supposed to go over Hamilton from the east on the stage that finishes in San Jose.

https://cdn.amgentourofcalifornia.com...-02_012617.pdf

I propose they should scrap this and substitute another Mount Diablo Summit finish.

These types of routes where they go over a big mountain then continue racing for a number of K's to a flat finish are useless. Either finish at the top of Hamilton or use Diablo. You can watch them Sunday-ride up Hamilton if the course continues for a ways into SJ. Kinda dumb.

Diablo should be a tradition, and they haven't used it in a few years now.

The ATOC stage turns left on Quimby road before the slide.
And the finish line is on a climb. Although San Felipe is no Mt. Diablo, it will definitely mess with you when you're at the limit.
