Garmin Vivosport + Garmin Edge

I've been using a Garmin Vivosport for some time which I use for recording both my running and my cycling.

I have contemplated getting a cycling computer for a while but I was generally put off by the price.

However I have seen that Halfords are currently doing a sale with considerable reductions on the Garmin Edge 25 and the Edge 820 making them very affordable, I may also be able to get an extra 10% off through a discount card.

My question is, would I be getting much more from a cycling computer than I do from my Vivosport? One of my main motives is that I record all of my rides including my commutes from work so my watch is constantly needing to be charged.

It's worth noting that I'm not a racer and my bike isn't kitted out with any sensors for cadence, speed or a power meter.

I have both and I have never used my watch for cycling. The computer is right there in front of me, it is a lot bigger than the watch, it gives me way more info than the watch would. As for sensors they usually come with the computer.

I have the Edge 25. It is quite basic and minimalistic, and about the size of a large watch. The battery gets charged via a proprietary USB cradle, and mine, which is 2 or 3 years old, isn't holding a charge very long now. Unless it offers something your watch doesn't, it sounds like it will just be duplicating your problems.

So based on your experience, the edge 25 probably won't provide more than I already get out of the vivosport. It seems like the edge 820 would possibly be the better choice as that will also give me navigation (which I currently use a homemade mount and my phone for)

Is there any reason to use both while riding? Like using the HR sensor on the watch but recording the ride on the Edge?

Sure. You can use the wrist heart sensor and broadcast it to an Edge. Most people "prefer" a chest strap though.

I used to have an 800, it was stolen a few years ago. I had it for 8 or 9 and it's amazing it still worked. The battery was fatigued, but held enough charge for a few hours of riding. I have a Garmin watch now and find it sufficient. An Edge would be very convenient for me to have, but I can't bring myself to spend the money, personally. With that said, the maps in the 820 provide something compelling that your watch doesn't. And it's nice to have a rugged, waterproof map where you can see it and not drain your phone.
