My Trek 700 touring has a 175mm Alivio triple crankset. My Trek 1500 roadie has an old school octalink DuraAce triple. I'm happy with both. A 48 big ring with an 11 or 12 tooth cog is still a pretty tall gear for many riders.

The problem I'd have with this scheme is that most MTB cranksets are 175 mm which I consider crazy long. I've been using much shorter cranks, and it works for me. Of course, this is mostly a matter of what you're used to, and if you're used to riding 175's already, this might not be an issue. If you have any knee problems, though, the 175's are a likely cause of that.
A old MTB crank is a great-cheap way to get a triple on a road bike allowing for a corn cob cassette or freewheel.

Top. Previous set up. 22-32-44x11-32. 18.6-108 gear inch.
Bottom. Current set up. 26-38x11-40. 17.6-93.3 gear inch. Ignore the 44t chainring. It is there as a spacer.
