Recumbent What IS that thing?! Recumbents may be odd looking, but they have many advantages over a "wedgie" bicycle. Discuss the in's and out's recumbent lifestyle in the recumbent forum.

Catrike Dumont or 559

Anyone have problems with their Dumont? Comfort and smooth ride are most important to me but the suspension worries me a little.

You can read a review of the Catrike Dumont here: https://www.bentrideronline.com/?p=11091 Catrike 559 here:https://www.bentrideronline.com/?p=10057#more-10057
Bentrider is a pretty reliable source for reviews. Both have been discussed a lot on the regular messageboard.

Here's a thought. I have an unsuspended Cartrike Trail. I replaced the stock tires with Big Apple balloon tires and the ride increased significantly. There is less slam on bumps and things are generally just smoother. Many think that Big Apples and Big Bens improve the ride of unsuspended trikes.

The tires don't feel as "connected" to the road as the stock tires, being larger and using much less inflation pressure, you can feel them flex a little. But the trike still is a super handler--it doesn't so much act different in corners as feel different. It still easily outcorners my ICE Adventure.

Anyway, a 559 with balloons is something to consider.

I ride a 559 with Big Apple tires @ 50 PSI. I live 2 miles from Missouri's Katy Trail so my riding is roughly 50% paved roads and trails and 50% crushed limestone Katy Trail. I'm happy with the ride quality.

Hello Retro Grouch,

Saw you are a 559 fan. My wife has a Villager. I have tried riding it but don't like the feel of my knees coming up close to my stomach.
I see the 559 has a more reclined seat though it doesn't adjust which I thought may be more comfortable for the above mentioned
problem.

Do you miss the fact of not having an adjustable seat on your 559? Also, is it harder to pedal with the low pressure tires?

I only ask because I'm considering buying a 559, couple of used ones for sale here.

Thanks, Scubaquarius

My 559 has a good amount of seat back angle adjustment. Also, I subjectively don't feel any difference in pedaling difficulty with out Big Apple tires than I did when we had the stock Marathon Race tires.

I'm puzzled about your comment about knees in your stomach. That sounds like a boom length adjustment issue to me. If your wife is shorter than you and if her trike has been adjusted to fit her, that's it. If you were to lengthen her boom you will almost surely also need to lengthen her chain.

Again a 559 will get the chain and RD further up out of the dirt and trash.
