Campy Front Chainrings Advice needed smaller size?
Hi
I have a 9 speed record setup from 1997. I am running a 53x39 and was just wondering if they have smaller front chain rings for an older system? The rear cassette in the back is a 23 tooth at the largest and at times, getting up the hills with that setup is getting difficult. I do have a 25 tooth rear but thought a compact setup would be better. I wouldn't mind going to a 50x37 or x 34/35 whatever works for an older setup.

A 9speed record crank would have a 135 BCD which allows 39 at the smallest. You would need to change to a compact crank or another brand of crank with a smaller bcd to run a smaller inner chaining. Personally I would recommend installing the 25tooth cassette (your current 39 front with a 25 back is more uphill gear than a 37front/23 back).

Your short cage rear derailleur should be able to handle a 29 tooth rear cog. So i suggest a Miche 12-29 9-speed cassette. Less than $35. If you need still lower gears, then a compact crankset is next. Even lower, then a triple, which would involve derailleur changes (both).
Obviously, a new longer chain is in order. 9-speed anything.

If you decide on a triple crank I have a NIB Campy with 170 arms that I'll sell for far less then modern stuff. Andy

Is the 9sp record crank a square taper? You could then replace the arms with something more suitable for a compact without changing the bottom bracket. I have a square taper Chorus 10 but still 53/39 like yours.
