Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Ultegra 6800 or used (800 miles) 6700...Big Difference?

Looking to upgrade my current drivetrain and need to find a good deal as I am not swimming in cash. My options are a slightly used Ultegra 6700 10spd groupset for $550 or a brand new 6800 11spd groupset for $750. Is there a big difference between the 2? Really worth the extra money for being brand new and 1 extra gear?

6800 shifting is quite a bit better, especially the front. I'd definitely go new. Check your wheels are compatible though.

I have Shimano RS80 wheels with no extra spacer for an 11spd. How much would a new hub be? Is replacement my only choice?

Shimano's first go at internal cable routing had issues. I'd skip Ultegra 6700, and Dura Ace 7900.

You can get 6800 for less than that. Is your current group starting to fail? And what are you coming from? If you have 5700 already, paying $550 for 6700 is pointless.

You can get full 6800 set up with everything for less than that? I am coming from 105 levers that need replacement from a wreck, 105 rd, tiagra fd and stock Bianchi reparto corse brakes as well as an fsa crankset that feels like its made of iron

Check out Ribble. In your shoes, I'd consider 5800 and leave a cog off the rear wheel (for now).

That's an 8/9/10 freehub, so an 11 cannot be made to fit.

You would have to buy a 5800 or 6800 hub and build it to a 3rd party rim. You can't buy the straight pull hubs with the low spoke count directly. (maybe as a replacement part?)

You're going to want a new wheel if you go to 11 speed. The hub flange spacing is different, and unless you can lace a hub and dish/true a wheel on your own you're going to have to find a shop to do it, and that's not counting the cost of an 11 spd hub. Those RS80 rims probably aren't worth spending the money on.

Most people forget the wheel costs when weighing whether or not to go with 11 speed.

Does anyone know about Oval 527 wheels? The seller mentioned he has them for sale for $80 new off of a Fuji and it's already set up for an 11spd. The groupset would also have Oval crankset

I think the Oval 527 wheelset would be a pretty big downgrade from RS80. (But $80 for a back-up set isn't bad at all.)

Yes, 5800 is the new 105 11-speed group (available for under $500). BUT - people have had success running 10 of the 11 cassette cogs with 5800/6800/9000 on rear wheels that don't accept 11 gears. I'd have to search for those threads, but they are here. Might be a temp solution...

Or if that sounds too mis-mash, a full new 4600 group is $300. Also, the newest 6800 cables make the 5700/6700 shifters work a bit more smoothly.

I think you will come out better if you buy from Ribble if you are looking for a full group.

5800 = $427
6800= $624

That is for the full group, you still have the issue with wheels though. IMO you can get a set of RS21 wheels for for about $200 and be fine.

edit: you can also get a nice price on 11 speed ready Vuelta wheels at Nashbar and still come out Cheaper than $750 if you go 5800 and Vueltas.

US dollars? I googled ribble and that is a UK site. 6800 goes for 465 pounds which is about $750US. Not sure where you get the $624 price from...I'd imagine shipping would be expensive on top of that.

Don't rely on conversion from pounds. Actually change the currency and choose the destination (on the top right of the page). Also, don't assume anything about shipping.

Looks like they only have silver 5800 right now, but 6800 is back in stock.

Yeah, I'd heard that works from a few sources. Please tell us more. What cassette, which cog did you leave out, did you need a different lockring or spacers, any other issues getting it set up, etc.

I did that and it's $749 for the 6800. I think you got it mixed up.

I put a thin spacer behind the cassette, maybe 1mm and removed the 13 and it's spacer from an 11-23 cassette. The accompanying lock ring worked perfect as well.

The setup works so good I have no plans to ever change it.

Did you have 5700 or 6700 before? Is this better overall? Is the 11-13 gap annoying? (I don't think I'd go below the 13 anyway)

the gap is non noticable, at least to me.

I have 4 bikes with the following;
9000
6770
7800
6600

I guess so!! Thanks for the additional info - great option for lots of "groupset shoppers" out there (like the OP) with nice 10-speed wheels.
