I agree with prioritizing supporting local shops over shopping online. Ask around and there is probably a shop willing to special order some Neubaums for you.

Yes, I return the cans and bottles for the $.10 deposit, but that's my money I paid and simply getting back.

Cheap isn't a thing people usually use to describe me.
I had only heard the "shrinking tape theory" with regard to leather handlebar tape. Soak in warm water pre-install, which allows for stretch and a tighter wrap. Then it gets tighter after it dries. I have never heard that idea when discussing a cloth tape install.

FWIW, it all seems like way too much work in either case. Also if you add a coat or two of shellac to cloth tape, it adheres to the bars so there would be no need to pre-soak.

The tape in fabric stores is called seam tape or fabric edging or twill tape. Here’s some in different colors. Same company has it is 3/4” and I’ve found some as wide as 1.5”. Another interesting tape to look at is called “Shaker tape” which is used for the seats of Shaker chairs. They have some interesting colors and some interesting patterns that might be fun to try as bar tape. Etsy seems to have a lot of different tapes like this in different colors and patterns.
This is actually cool information about twill tape. Likely a ton more colors.

I have got an answer for something no one has asked... I have a multiple lifetime supply of old cotton blue, white and red bar "tape" - the sticky tape part being dried out and useless by age. Cheap as I am I use 3M spray glue on it. Works perfectly.

In Drillium Dude’s well written guide on shellacking, Big Block wrote about a bike he bought from an old racer and said, “The original owner of this bike scoffed at shellac, saying old racers simply removed the tape when it got dirty, washed the tape and let the tape dry then reinstalled it. So when he retired from riding and gifted the bike, I could not make the shellac-obvious. Bob didn't notice!”

I know I’ve read elsewhere about washing tape prior to shellacking.

Glass container
lil bleach
peroxide based detergent
warm water
slight agitation every couple of minutes:

After a 30 min wait,

I could see the water went from blue-ish to dinge.

dumped the soapy bleach water into the mop bucket and cleaned the kitchen floors while the tapes rinsed in the sink.

wait a minute…. Maybe I am cheap.

the tapes are drying a little on some towels, I still want them damp. Will reinstall in a bit after the floors dry.

The glue seems unaffected. The missing glue is what was left on the handlebars from removal.

And, the glue still has some tack to it. Tape is much cleaner than it was. Not perfect but I wasn’t looking for perfect.

I say it’s a win!!!

about to reinstall.

You have never heard such an onslaught of almost swear words….

Remember Yosemite Sam, and his colorful vocabulary?

that was me.

Consarn it!, Dagnabit you rassa-frassin’ fur-bearin’ critter!

Now, ya racka-frackin’ carrot-chewin’ varmint! You stretch until you go to the little hole!!”

anyway.

Frack.
