Question on studded mt bike tires.
I was looking at studded Schwalbe tires an they said to ride 40k on pavement to set the studs to prevent their loss. Is that problem with all studs of just with Schwable?
Thanks
Thanks

Nokian has that too. It's to get all the studs settled or pushed in to keep them from falling out. The part of the stud you can't see is like a nail head.

Don't know if "problem" is such an accurate word for it...
But yeah, at least Suomityres - previously Nokian - has that recommendation too.
IMO it's not strictly required. Careful - as in try not to slide - riding on ice and hardpack will settle the studs quite well too.
My previous Sumoityres gave up mid-season, so I had to switch to SMW w/o any break-in period.
When I checked them at the end of that season there was one stud missing.
Might just as well have been accidental.

40 km? That seems like a lot of setting
From having put in studs on my fatbike tires, you can tell if they are not set. I would think that a simple visual inspection would tell

I have 3 ten year old Schwalbe tires with like 10 studs missing on each tire.

On ice, the rubber will slide but the studs will grip, causing more pull on the studs. On bare ground the rubber will grip too, causing less pull on the studs. The kinda-sorta massage the studs get from rolling along in a controlled manner helps the flange at the inner end of the stud to seat itself more firmly in the tire.

I dont count Miles ,so I cannot play that game .. My Suomi Nokian tires get occasional Use ,
because I dont live where its always cold and snowing every winter .
But My tires bought in 1990 still have all their studs & insignificant tread wear .
