Guess the bill!

Dropped my bike off (Fuji Hybrid) at the LBS and requested the following:

Ultegra compact crank (50/39) with matching bottom bracket
New rear cassette
New chain
Tune up (it's been a year)
Wheel Truing
2 Continental Gator Hardshell tires and tubes (700x28)

Owner said he would call me when he had everything priced out, including labor. Take a shot and I'll post the real damage when I get it

Including labour, about $750.

Whatever, it's pretty expensive for just wanting something different.

Did you miss the "LBS" part? Those are like Evans/Ribble prices. A single Gatorskin retails for about $60, and an Ultegra cassette is at least $80.

My guess is $650-700 total, dependent on what your shop charges for tune up and truing.

Yep about this. I might have gone slightly lower ... maybe as low as $700.

The bill will come to more than the bike is worth.

Assuming we're talking about the 2010 Fuji Absolute 3.0 in your profile, you may wind up adding a few parts to the shopping list. Your bike was originally equipped with a triple crankset and shifters to match. To do things right, you'd replace the shifters to match your new double crankset.

And if we are talking about that 2010 Fuji, Ultegra is SEVERE overkill for a hybrid otherwise equipped with Altus/Acera parts.

I'm watching Cult of the Cobra Woman, starring the beguiling Faith Domergue. Delivery guy, played by Bing Russell -- father of Kurt Russell -- brings some shirts from the dry cleaner. Aspiring actress Julia Thompson, played by actual actress Kathleen Hughes, asks how much for the dry cleaning.

Delivery guy says "Tree fiddy".

Adjusted for inflation, your bicycle upgrades should cost no more than $31.48.

The spirits have spoken.

Ultegra does seem like a big step up for a Fuji hybrid, but to each his/her own. Assuming that the OP needed a new cassette, chain and tires anyway, its an extra $200 or so for the crankset. OP didn't specify which cassette and chain he'd be getting, so if he sticks with something midrange there, and you consider the cassette, chain and tires as consumables that you would expect to replace from time to time anyway, the Ultegra crankset isn't all that ridiculous. Personally I'd have settled for a Deore triple or maybe a Tiagra double.

It's going to depend on your relationship with the LBS, but around $500 would be fair. I think you shorted yourself by not considering an upgrade to a new bike with higher end components. Between what this service will cost you and what you could have sold the old bike for, you might not be that far off the cost of a new one.

On the other hand, if this bike is fitting you so well, then upgrading and making it even better makes perfect sense.

I say, learn how to work on your own bike, you'll have more of a connection between you and bike.
What the heck is a tune up anyway?
Some shops charge 70 bucks for a so called tune up, plus parts!

That they're going to charge for the tuneup after all of that makes me think that you're in for it. $550. Plus they're going to say you need new cables or something.
