Anyone available in the Sacramento area, more specifically Davis? I'm going to return seller's call and get more info on his bike. Let me know.

No deal, not what I wanted.

How does a facilitation usually work out?
Does the potential buyer do all of the talking and set up a time for the facilitator to check out the bike, or is it more along the lines on pm'ing a guy and asking them to go check something out for you?

Funny you should ask, I facilitated a CL bike for a member about 13.5 hours ago

This is how it worked for last night:

- Member contacted me, I said sure, anytime.
- Member contacted the seller, asked for pics, made sure that it was worth my going out to look/at purchase.
- That being true I gave the member my cell number, he passed it to the seller. He passed the seller's number to me.
- Since I didn't have the cash on hand for this the member PayPalled me the $$$ Sunday. I immediately transferred to my back account.
- The member arranged with the seller to hold the bike until the funds got to my bank account. I contacted the seller, introduced myself and what the process was. he was fine with the whole deal.
- Funds arrived yesterday, I withdrew cash, arranged with seller to view the bike that night.
- Went out, met the seller, examined the bike, all good...purchased and brought home.
- I talked to the member today, we discussed shipping, etc. I'll be boxing it up over the weekend and shipping it out Monday hopefully.

The process can take whatever form you like. I usually want the buyer to do all the question asking, price negotiating, etc. prior to my getting there. I view my purpose when I get there as a final gut check on condition and presence of everything advertised AND as the buying agent. I usually have a prior discussion with the buyer about what condition is acceptable, anything particular they'd like me to look for, etc. I ALWAYS recommend that the buyer be available by phone at the time of the meeting in case there should be something I need to discuss. I've even sent cell phone pics on the fly while on the phone.

I hope that answers your question. Do take a look at the guidelines I posted in the first post of the thread. Again, GUIDELINES and what has worked for me in the facilitation of about 8 bikes now and more small items.

For frames or bikes I'd prefer to let the local shop do the packing. Currently I'm spending about 60/40 split between DC and Osaka.

Can anyone in Thunder Bay facilitate for me?

I know I only have fifteen posts, but there is a beautiful marinoni up there right now.

How would I get PM privileges for an exceptional circumstance like this?

Thanks!

Anyone near Brownsville, Wisconsin

Hey all, have been away from the boards for a while and am glad to see this thread. Trying to get a bike from the Brownsville, Wisconsin area to Florida. I'm hoping there is someone reasonably close as I don't want to be too much of an inconvenience. Please PM if able to help. Thank you and keep riding.

Primary CL City: Los Angeles

Items willing to facilitate: rims, wheels, frame sets, complete bikes (prefer vintage bikes, pre-monocoque carbon, except by special request)
Where do I ship: CONUS and International,

Note: Having shipped countless parts, frames and whole bikes I have found a special niche in shipping whole bikes to countries with a postal limitation of a 108" box. Most of the complete bikes I've shipped have gone to South Korea and Japan in a single box. I have an account with USPS and prefer to ship USPS Express Mail International. Within CONUS I ship UPS or FedEx ground. My son and I are skilled mechanics with our own workshop and a decent collection of vintage steel, but we also work on bikes for pro racers.

Bicycles shipped internationally are disassembled more than when shipping within CONUS, so at a minimum I remove the chain, crankset, pedals, seatpost and saddle, handlebars and stem and fork (headset bits and bearings carefully packed). Furthermore I remove the wheels and remove the skewers and axles from the hubs (bearings carefully packed). This last task keeps sharp objects from protruding from the box and allows the wheels to ship with the frame. I use 8" wide boxes and have found that some handlebars with deep drops do not fit, this is a rare occurrence. I use pipe insulation when necessary to protect the frame from lose parts. When shipping a frame set it is not necessary. I use spacers to help prevent the box from getting crushed. I use bubble wrap sparingly and only for small parts. I recycle when possible. I do not use peanuts, synthetic or biodegradable. I work for peanuts but not for free.

My clients usually purchase a bike via CL or ebay and have their purchase delivered to my address. Local pickup may be available but I do not handle payments. It takes me about a week to pack and ship since I'm busy running a business. Just prior to shipping I send the invoice to the client for payment via paypal, I then ship the next business day. When I receive the bicycle for shipment I photograph in detail prior to disassembly and immediately send pics via email to my client. This allows the client to deal with the seller in case of problems. I NEVER get involved in disputes between seller and purchaser. I also photograph the disassembly and packing process for my protection.

All 108" boxes are custom built. Crating is available but expensive, so save that for your Rene Herese, Hetchins Magnum Opus or Gloria Garibaldina. My last shipment was a Rickert track bike to Japan, 26 lbs including packaging, single 108" box, $155 USPS postage.

As far as shipping...for whole bikes or wheels, I go right to a local wholesaler/shop called Bells Bicycles. Their shipping discount is so large that it's cheaper for me to ship through them and have them do the work.
Hi Aaron,

Would you be willing to facilitate a shipment from Philly to Weeki Wachee, FL? I'm looking at a bike on the auction site.

Thanks,
Joe

Long Overdue Update!

I updated the tabular list with the additions since last update.

We've also, at least partially, covered a couple states on the missing list, central AR and northern DE. We've also had Chilero step up for Los Angeles!

Thanks, as always, to EVERYONE listed here or not who helps out fellow forum members with non-local purchases.

It also seems we had a member help stevenc in Belgium with an eBay purchase, thanks to whomever! stevenc, I know I wouldn't mind if you out the guilty party and give him or her some public props!

Here's are the states we've yet to cover:

Alabama
Florida
Hawaii
Idaho
Kansas
Kentucky
Mississippi
Montana
North Dakota
New Hampshire
Nevada
New York
Rhode Island
South Carolina
South Dakota
Utah
West Virginia
Wyoming

And once again, thanks to all...

My pick for facilitator of the year

Alan Edwards out of Lancaster, California drove several hours with wife and kids in tow to pay for, pick up and box a beautiful Centurion Turbo for me in Chicago . As facilitators go, they don't get any better than Allan.
