Crack in Six13 Frame

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Crack in Six13 Frame

Is this something i should be worried about? This frame is virtually new, and a crack has developed at the joint between the aluminum head tube piece and the carbon down tube. It appears to be just in the clear coat and covers about half the circumference of the tube. It is becoming more visible as it get filled with dust. There are no other other cracks or imperfections anywhere.

That appears to be a finish issue more than structural. Either way, a warranty issue. I'd have my LBS look at that before I rode the bike more.

Very strongly doubt that it is stuctural. Cannondale really needs to sort out their white paint... there have been many issues over the past couple years.

yeah, I'll defiantly take it back to LBS. The only thing i worry about though is if ill be able to get a new Six13 frame if it goes back on warranty since they dont make them anymore. I might get stuck with one of those crappy Six carbons.

It's Cracknfail you friggin newbie poser know-nothing. And that has been the 'joke' (it's not funny because it's so old and worn out) for 20+ years. Of course you were probably in diapers when this was first bantered around a fast ride, so I pardon you.

That comes from the propensity of aluminum to crack when it T-bones a car (compared to steel, when this phrase was invented it was mostly steel or aluminum). So try not to T-bone an immoveable object. Real structural failures of Cdales due to product failure are rare, and the company is better than most when it comes to warranty issues. I'm sure the company will replace or repair this Six13, and I'll bet it is more likely to be a finish issue. Regardless, you don't want to ride a bike like that, get it inspected.

Even if it is a simple finish issue, get the frame replaced. I'd be pissed if this happened to my new frame.

Alright, I took the bike into the shop today, they are gonna talk to Cannondale tomorrow and see what the deal is. Most likely It'll get replaced, with hopefully the same frame I have now, but who knows. At the very least I'm out a bike for at least a week, which means I might have to go mountain biking to make up for lost time.

Since they don't make Six13s anymore...unless they have some reserve inventory for warranty issues, who knows what the equivalent replacement would be.

If my Six13 had issues, I'd just trade for a CAAD 9.
