Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Garage Bike Storage

I currently store my bikes on the floor of the garage, leaning them against a wall. I just adopted a puppy and we plan to let him stay in the garage while we are at work and I am concerned that he may chew on the bike tires.

I have been looking for a rack that I can store the bikes on and get them off the floor, but I don't know if all racks will work because my wife's bike has a step through frame (for reference this is her bike - https://thebicyclechain.com/itemdetails.cfm?ID=1805).

I found the following vertical bike rack, but don't know whether there may be a better option, or how well these work: https://www.bikerackshops.com/SAR600BIKETRAC.html

Any input you may be able to offer would be great.

No need for the dog walker, I walk him nightly. The "regular" bike hooks totally slipped my mind. Thanks for the reminder.

Hire a dog walker. It's pretty cruel to leave a puppy alone in the garage while you're at work all day.

Again, there is no need for the dog walker. My mother-in-law picks up the dog and takes him to play with her dog mon-fri before she picks up my daughter from school. Also, as previously mentioned he is walked regularly.

If the hooks don't work out, you can get an adapter for the step-through bike. I had to get one for my wife's Nomad so I can get it on the car rack. Similar to this:

You are doing it backwards. Get a crate for the dog.

If your dog does not like the crate you have done it wrong. Everyone will be happier if your dog learns to not chew things in the first place instead of you yelling at it for the next 12 years. If you are not there to supervise, dog goes in the crate. If you really want a housebroken dog stick it on a leash whenever it is out of the crate. Depending on age they will get the program real fast.

this isn't a bad idea (as long as the dog isn't left unsupervised for too long).

Yep, common sense is required. You can't just stick a 2 month old puppy in a crate for 12 hours. This is a decent article on crate training. It even provides time limits based on age. Again, if your dog does not like its crate something is wrong.

Rubberized hooks, as pictured above. $3 each at your local hardware store. You could hang a dozen bikes before you start getting close to the cost of the vertical rack.

Dog = crate train. My almost-6-month-old black lab puppy loves his crate. It was easy to house break him, and he hasn't chewed anything (which is a HUGE difference from my 2 former labs, which were not crate trained).

Wow. Believe it or not, he didn't ask any advice on where to keep his dog. Holy hijackers.

The ceiling hooks are probably your best bet.

I use the ceiling hooks and they work fine. And I also highly recommend crate training versus open space. Dogs who are crate trained are also much easier to potty train. My wife's a veterinarian and we've got two dogs, so I speak from experience.

But in any event, yeah... ceiling hooks. Cheaper than most of the wall mount options too.

Maybe we should require lurking before posting? Have some BF knowledge before contributing? We could set up an entrance exam. Then the first year of membership is like when 15-year-old gets learner's permits for driving.

if nothing else, the age limite to join rthis forum should be raised to 18, so we can be spared the emo musings of self righteous teenagers from the northwest.
