If $10,000 for a bicycle is too much, what about $30,000 for a yacht or $15,000 for a grand piano?

Question in the op was whether it's an extravagant luxury. Obviously, pretty much any yacht is, and the need for that quality of piano is going to depend on what it's going to be used for. If it's just being used to display photos, it definitely could be.
My answer had an exception for professional racers, btw.
I don't object to people spending money that way, I do object to people claiming those purchases are "ordinary" .

As the great western philosopher, Archie Bunker, said to his prize student, Meathead, “I got two words for you ‘crap’ ‘ola’”. Buy the bike you want, can afford and makes you happy.

Who here considers a $10,000 bike to be a lavish luxurious extravagance? It seems kind of normal to me. At least in my geographic area. Sure $3, 4, $5,000 bike are pretty much normal & everywhere as far as I can tell. $10,000 May be a bit on the high side of things, but certainly nothing out of the ordinary.
- When I saw something is 'kind of normal', to me that means it is something I see with regularity and a relatively high frequency. At least 15% is, to me, the 'kind of normal'. Anything less is somewhere are in the 'rare' or 'uncommon' categories. I dont think I would even call modern steel road bikes 'kind of common'. But hey, where you ride and who you see when riding must be much different than me(and most others).
- $3000-5000 bikes are not pretty much everywhere around me. Not even close, and I live in a relatively active cycling region.
No I wouldnt trade 5-10% of my annual income to buy someone a meal. I wouldnt do that because reality isnt this binary.

I agree that this thread is stupid.
You don't need to trade in or even own an expensive bike to buy a meal for the homeless.
Try it.

I know a fellow cyclist who spent a little less than $10k on a custom Ti. He also spends (his time) every Thanksgiving feeding the poor at a soup kitchen. Does he get any credit?

Could we at least make the hypothetical a little more interesting?
Would you give up your $10,000 bike to go back in time to kill Baby Hitler?

Definitely the baby hitler horses then. I could put a string between the pedals and swing them.

There is a BF member who has posted about his bike bling expenditures. I believe he has a pair of these $8,000+ wheels:

Keep in mind that he also brought a crate of high-end tires to his native country to give away and flew the staff of his LBS to a cycling vacation as a thank you gift for working on his bikes.
Pretty nice fella if you ask me. He can brag about his purchases all he wants.
