A comprehensive article with lots of data and a crisp summary at the end.

Right on the cusp of a huge disruption by Look.
which at the time felt was a good concept with shoes that were not ready for them.

i made up 1” wide straps to replace the toe strap- anchored around the shoe itself-
it helped but still shoes were coming apart elsewhere- possibly due to the early adoption of nylon soles and Nylon mesh uppers.
nylon is hard to bond to.

Thank you for posting this 1983 pedal review from Bicycling!
I very well remember that pedal review article when it was published (I even remeber That pic with the butler holding the tray with a pedal on it). I remember drooling over the then unique Ofmega made Avocet composite aero pedal that was reviewed and I thought it was such a super high tech product back then. I felt like things were just getting better and better and more techy bike stuff was just around the corner.

That was a good read. I fall into the category that doesn't do well with quill pedals. My shoe size is 11.5 - 12, but also very wide. I have trouble finding good shoes that are wide enough to be comfortable, let alone pedals. My favorite pedals are my Dyna-drive Shimano Deore pedals, they are huge! Other than that, I really like the platform style (Berthet, MKS, SP11, etc). I have a ton of the MKS sylvans, those are my favorite for flexibility of use, although less comfortable than platforms.

I was born 1 month after this article was published .

I have the deore dd crank and pedals. Really a nice setup. It uses 50.4 rings.
