Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano 6603 crank with 5500 bottom bracket?

My friend has an extra Ultegra 6603 crank and is willing to let me buy for cheap and I am trying to figure out if I can use it without having to change out my current bottom bracket. Right now I have a 105 5505 crankset (2005 Trek 2100) and if it isn't compatible is it enough of a difference to be worth changing out the bottom bracket for? There's nothing wrong with my current crank just an opportunity to upgrade. Also, the arm length is slightly different, 170 vs 172.5, so that goes into account as well. Thanks!

I'm using a 105 bottom bracket with an Ultegra crankset, works fine as long as they're both the hollowtech external cups or whatever they're called.

The BB-5500 is an Octalink Bottom Bracket, the 6603 is a Hollowtech II design. They will not work together. However, a new FC-6600 bottom bracket is around $45.

Any reason to pick a BB-6600 over a BB-6700? The BB-6700s can be found for $25, a lot cheaper than the BB-6600s.

No, any Hollowtech II BB will work. If you are trying to go cheap a 4500 will work, which are under $20. I just stayed in the family with the suggestion.
