Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

UK Orders - Hidden Costs?

I'm deciding on whether to purchase a new groupset & wheels from my LBS or online from one of the UK websites. Are there any additional taxes or hidden costs when I purchase from overseas? I'm going to give my LBS a chance to match (or at least within 15%) the total cost, but I wasn't certain if I was going to get hit with some kind of customs charge or similar for a $2K order. Thanks

shipping on wheels is going to cost you in oversized shipping and possibly custom charges.

sigh, why doesn't anyone use search.

Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (2010)
Chapter 87

https://www.usitc.gov/tata/hts/bychapter/index.htm

I had to dispute a UPS customs charge once for parts that had no duty. They rescinded it no problem.
Just because a part may or may not have an import duty according to the Feds, doesn't mean the shipper is smart enough to comply. So sometimes you are wrongfully charged, and other times you aren't when you should have been.

The only hidden cost might be some fee on your credit card for the inernational transaction. It's not that much though.

Wow, that is a complicated tariff schedule. If I understood it properly, I'd be looking at 5% tariff on the wheels and no tariff on the groupset in addition to any shipping charges. Thanks for the info.

Fixed to reflect my experience.

I've purchased wheels from ChainReaction and components from Total Cycling, both well known UK online retailers. Never paid customs charge though others have. It seems to be hit and miss. I guess I've been lucky. One well known BFer was charged $70 customs fee for the same wheels. YMMV.
