Bear Mt (NY) Closed to Cars - But Bikes?
Hi, does anyone have any more concrete info on Bear Mt right now? I know Perkins Drive is closed to vehicles, as are a number of other roads in Harriman State Park, but that usually means cars. There's no mention of cycling that I can find on any official, or news media, posting. If I wanted to ride up Perkins to the top of Bear, could I right now? I may take the sport over there at some point to recon it, but thought I'd ask here first.
Thanks for any info anyone may have.

The Park website states that certain roads are closed, not “closed to cars”. I’d guess they won’t allow bikes either.

In the past those have been seasonal closures as the roads aren't maintained in the winter months. I've ridden past the gates on Perkins and Tioroti in the past. And Tiorati and Arden Valley while closed to cars are open to vehicles with boat launch permits. Just be aware that Perkins migh not be cleared of winter debris.

Thanks folks. Steve B - fair point, I admit I may have been projecting a bit with that. dendawg - thanks, point on winter debris appreciated. I don't really have a reason to be in that area in the immediate future but if I do I'll try to track down one of the rangers for a bit more clarity. There are times I don't mind taking a few liberties, but under the circumstances it doesn't make sense (to me) to be "that guy". I'm sure the park folks are dealing with enough. If I get more I'll post it unless someone beats me to it.

I’d bet if you call, if you can find a number for the local park cops, and ask, they will tell you no bikes.
Reality is they might not even check the roads as they would have to move the barriers to drive and check, thus only if they saw you coming/going would they know.
Your call but I understand. It’s SO tempting knowing there no cars on the road.
They’ll be pissed if you crash and have to call them though....

A friend of mine was up in Harriman today. He reports being able to ride on the roads closed to auto traffic, and also reports the park being not at all crowded. I don't know if he wandered across the line into Bear Mountain. Are both parks administrated as one unit?

Unfortunately the only way to get directly from Harriman to Bear is to illegaly cross the Long Mtn Circle and ride across the Palisades to conitnue on Seven Lakes Drive

I was there April 22nd, Bear mountain park is closed,so is the Rockland lake park,
Gate at the bottom initial entrance from the parking lot is closed, car lot is open, Perkins drive is also closed , because I cycle about 40 miles to get to the mountain I jump both gates.
it so windy at the top I thought if don't hold my bike it would fly away, I just took few pictures and cycle down, road has some broken little branches nothing to worry about that, but you wont see any other soul, kind of eerie,
now I'm thinking I would not do it or recommend, if something happens up there, you know,

Went up to the top of Bear Mt today. No issues other than having to dismount to get around the gate at the bottom of Perkins Drive. Saw six other cyclists on the closed portion or at the top, and dozens of people who hiked up via the trails. Road condition was good, no concerns. A good ride.

I was up there for an overnight hike yesterday and today. The road closures are more extensive than had been posted as 7 Lakes Drive was mostly closed. We had to park at the Bear Mtn Inn, where we saw no bikes.

Have they re-opened the shelters or is it still tents off the trail only?

Crappy phone pic looking west from where someone sometime may have camped. West Mountain is at the right side of the frame, you might be able to pick out a pinpoint of light at the shelter. Bright "star" visible is Venus.

near the lodge, we used to ice skate & watch ski jumpers, when I was very young. uncle used to have a house on Lake Tiorati. that's where my cousin taught me to fish & actually catch fish. also how to jump a large outboard motor boat over logs. he ran the throttle & the wheel & I had to tilt the motor out of the water at the last second ... good times
