That’s good to hear. I was a little concerned about the low price point compared to other options I’d seen. At 300+ lbs, I’m not really concerned about a couple extra pounds on my wheels. I just want something that I can feel confident riding on and that would work on a future, better bike, should I upgrade on a year or two.
Thanks!

I've got one bike, so one set of wheels - Dura-Ace 7700 32h hubs, DT Champion spokes (14/15/14) with brass nipples and silver Mavic Open Pro rims. Original build in 2001 (when I was much lighter) used black Open Pros with DT Revolution spokes. I rebuilt the wheels in 2009 with new rims (due to brake track wear) and the slightly beefier spokes. I'm in the 250s weight-wise now and have had no trouble with the wheels.

Squirtdad those are cool older Miyata's. It looks like you are running tubulars. I commend you for you persistance. I raced tubulars in the early 1970's but have long since given them up. Very nice bikes.

Nishiki Sebring with Shimano WH-RS10 16 spoke front wheel and 20 spoke rear wheel. This bike does just fine on paved/dirt/gravel roads.

Three of my bikes run on Velo Orange 36 hole hubs with Velocity Chukker rims in 700c, CR-18 rims in 27"x1 1/4", a 26" Mavic and a 20" CR-18. The 27" wheelset has bladed 2mm spokes. The rest are 2mm round spokes. All these wheels survived me at 282lbs. Then I have the Nishiki drop bar bike with a Shimano WH-RS10 wheelset. I wanted a lighter more aero wheelset and bought these used off of Craigslist. 16 spokes on the front wheel and 20 spokes on the rear wheel. I have not measured the diameter of the spokes but they are bigger than 2mm. I am running 32mm Gaterskin tires on this wheelset. I weighed about 260 lbs when I first bought these and rode them. Not only are these wheels very fast but they are very durable. I have ridden these wheels on gravel roads quite a bit with no complaint. I have a lot of miles on this wheelset now and feel confident about riding them. I was not so confident in them when I first started using them.

Broken Spoke postscript

No sooner than I write how my Shimano WH-RS10 wheelset has gone 350 miles with no breakage than I break a spoke. Rear wheel non drive side spoke broke at the thread into the nipple. Going to order a couple of spokes and replace this one and I'll keep you posted on whether it breaks any more.

Replaced the broken spoke on my Shimano WH-RS10 wheelset and have been burning up the road again with it. This is a used wheelset and the broken spoke looked like it had some corrosion issues between it and the nipple. I measured the spoke diameter and it looked like it might be smaller than 2mm. My plastic measuring caliper is not that accurate so take this measurement with a grain of salt.

700x26 36 spoke Mavic in the rear and a 34 spoke Mavic in the front. It works for me. I was riding 24's but my LBS said to move up, to small for my size.

Wheel-set 1: Chris King, with HED Belgium + rims. 38mm Barlow Pass tires. 28/28 CX-ray.

Wheel-set 2: November, same as above but with White Industries hubs, 28/32.

I recommend either, with a slight preference to #1 .

Funny, I talked about how well my wheels did for 2.5 years with 1.8mm spokes when last week I broke 3 spokes. I managed to fix one of them which was broken at the hub but snapped the other 2 spokes at the nipple on a couple of hard climbs; bit of a mud grind even being in a 30/42. Still none broken in the front but butted wheelsmith in the back.

6 feet, 212 lbs last time I looked.

All Mavic it seems. i have various forms of Ksyrium - Equipe, SL, Elite UST, and a set of bog standard Aksium. All good. They seem to hold up well. The Equipes do some pretty heavy durty gravel from time to time and the USTs are seeing a lot of miles this summer. SO far so good.

Rolf Echelon for a Clyde

I am 6'3" 230 lbs. I am riding on Rolf Echelon wheels. I chose the Echelon because they use a steel axle instead of an aluminum axle found in the Vigor.

They are rim brake wheels, so they are 16/20 spokes F/R. The front has been trouble free. The rear was trouble free for the first year, maybe 3000 miles. Then in their second year I broke one spoke, then another spoke on the rear non-drive side. Both broke at the root of the nipple threads. Both looked like fatigue.

I did the first spoke. Rolf did repair the wheels after the second with me paying shipping. They are back on the bike and have maybe 500 miles without any more trouble. If they continue to be good, I am very happy. If they break again I will build up a new rear wheel with Hope hubs, more spokes, and some rim with a profile similar to the Rolf wheels. The Rolf will stay in front as long as it performs the way it has to date.

I've had good luck with Vuelta products so here goes on a new Vuelta SL37 Wheel set. 12 spokes front, 16 spokes out back. We'll see. I've had very good luck with another aero wheel set for mountain bikes by Vuelta

I own a used Shimano WH-RH10 wheel set that broke a non drive side rear spoke which I replaced. It spooked me a little so I bought this wheel set to try. . Aluminum 37mm rims and steel spokes that look to be 2mm round before they are flattened. Straight pull spoke hubs with nipple at rim. These rims are in the same speed range as the Shimano wheels but slightly noisier. They get a kind of road roar from certain types of pavement, not very loud but noticeable. The tires are 32mm Gatorskins. First time trying this type of tire and I'm impressed with their speed and good performance. I have about 150 miles on the wheel set and no broken spokes, cracked rims or other signs of trouble. Pretty awesome for a 235lb rider on an old steel bike, must be 270lbs all up with water and tools if not a bit more. If they last I'll comment on them again next year. In the future I am looking for a carbon rim wheel set with 50-80mm rims for rim brakes. These aero wheels have been a late life revelation to me and I really enjoy riding them. These types of wheels turn a lower quality ten speed of yesteryear into a faster more modern performer.

I don't ride wheels; I ride a complete bicycle. LOL Sorry, couldn't resist.

My latest acquisition. It's a Fiori Napoli with Shimano N600 index groupset.

Cheers

I don't have a current picture of my bike on this pc. But my wheels are DT Swiss RR1.2 with Shimano Ultegra hubs and 32 spokes both front and rear. I have almost 49000 miles on them. I am amazed that I have not had any structural failures. No broken spokes, very minor adjustments. But they are getting worn mechanically. The cones and cups in the hubs are pretty worn. The brake surface is also. I started a thread to look for advise on a new set.

Sun Rhyno-Lite rim on the rear, many miles of trouble free use with 700x35 tires.

I had an Alex road rim (Ace 19?) on the front and disliked the 'omega' tire profile caused by a 35mm tire mounted on a 14mm rim, so when I found a cheap wheel with a single wall rim with similar outside dimensions to the Rhyno Lite, I threw that on. About 1000 kms so far and it is fine on the front.

I have two bikes....a FUJI aluminum frame road bike (all SRAM 2x10) with a set of Ultegra 32h hubs, Straight Gauge Spokes and SUN CR18 rims and A recent built of a Gravel bike on a Jamis Renegade Frame. The wheels on the gravel bike were more of a challenge because the rear is a 135 with a regular skewer and the front is a 12mm MTB axle (disk brakes). I ended up with Deore XT hubs, 36 straight gauge spokes and CR18 rims. Both sets of wheels have proven to be very strong!

In the early years of my building bikes (starting around 2002), I was really into fat tires (24 X 3.0) and custom wheels on specialty cruisers. That was pretty much the only size available then.
I was making my own wheels, so after trying stock rims and others that were commonly available in US bike stores, I started buying rims from the UK. What I found there
were wide BMX rims from Brave Machine and Halo SAS in the 24 inch 36 spoke size. These are high quality, double wall, very durable rims and, at the time, came in a variety of colors.
Perfect for the fat tires of the time. Later on, I started building 26 inch 36 spoke wheels for more general use bikes. For these, I still liked the Halo SAS rims but with Schwalbe tires in 26 X 2.35 size. They are called "balloon" tires (note, not fat) and are still a good all around size for my type of local riding.
