Never said it was a prerequisite, but I don't want to hear people saying something is useless if they don't even use it for what it's intended for. I'm not the one going around calling stuff garbage.

No seriously, if you're in a situation where every last amount of peformance counts, how is 6 speed friction superior to perfectly indexed 7 speed? There are less gears and it takes longer to shift. I seriously don't understand. If you prefer the feel or whatever that's one thing, but it's just plain wrong to call indexing 'useless'. Maybe you were traumatized by campy indexing? I don't know.
I wouldn't normally call anyone out specifically but this is so perfectly indicative of the problem in C&V. Everyone is making simple general statements and you go and try to hold someone's feet to the fire and force them to explain their comment with facts and figures as if they were making an argument they were not. Its like you're looking to start an argument.
Dude you are a decent person, why do you have to act like that? Just be cool. Nobody wants to come in here and fight....there's a difference between have an opinion and forcing someone to debate.

I don't run any brifters but if I found a decent 8 speed set would try them on my Moulden XC bike which is currently running 8 speed bar ends that I simply adore.
My other indexed bike is my Blizzard mtb that runs XT 9 speed and after that it is all friction on down tubes and bar ends. Must say the newly installed Simplex retrofrictions on my Garlatti are pretty freaking sweet and the indexed dt shifters were always a favourite as they work so incredibly well, especially in the heat of the moment.
The Simplex 543 on my Peugeot shifts like it is indexed... remarkable since it doss not even use a parallelogram design and that Simplex equipped bikes were used in high level competition when Campagnolo had introduced the "superior" Gran Sport derailleur.
Guess this is what I like... the history and the technology... and the ride.

Guess what...it's possible to appreciate good shifting without aggressive riding. I have not had good experiences with indexed dt shifting...when it's not in gear you can't adjust, it requires constant tuning and it feels chunky. I've had 7 sp 105, 7 sp da and 8 sp da...and have turned all to friction.

this post is exactly what brings negative attitude to threads like this.

Please define "aggressive riding". You have mentioned in this post and at least one other that you are using c&v bikes the way the were "meant to be ridden". Please take a minute and explain. The floor is yours......

I'll take the floor re the "aggressive riding" comment. I don't get out as much as I would like, and I have no illusions that I am a fast rider (though I once was). But I do take my steel, 6-gear, DT friction bike out on club rides. When I do, I'll push the bike as far as my lungs will take me. I'll participate in sprints. I hit 50+ mph descending during my last ride. Race bikes are not meant to be ridden at 15mph on a municipal bike path.
I have to stick up for mazdaspeed. I was not at all put off his comment (quoted by ZB as what's wrong withh C&V). I knew what he was getting at and didn't think it was snide or condescending. And KAS is entitled to his opinion as well. I agree with him, too. I also find DA to be chunky (or perhaps clunky, but not "crap"). There is no right & wrong. We're all like-minded people with a shared interest, albeit with differing opinions. No reason to get up in arms.

Gaucho, it's all personal man. There's no right/wrong...just preference and personal priorities. Like you, i was once fast...i find index dt annoying, and had issues during some inopportune times. There is spillover from another thread here as well.

I know I'm not fast. I get passed by a 78 year old lady in the bike club with which I sometimes ride. She passes most people, though. Perhaps there is something to the carbon and brifters.

I attempted my 2nd triathlon a year after finishing dead last in the water during my first one.
I trained like crazy. I finished 2nd to last in the water, next to a 55-year old lady. I was 22 or 23.
We agreed to race up the hill to the bikes.
Mine was a Varsity, $10, well-lubed with 3-in-1 oil. Hers was a mixte.
I definitely kicked her butt on the ride.
Afterwards, we had a beer and she told me what a "mixte" was.
We've been friends ever since, until she passed a couple of years ago.
Yep, it's about the bike.

oh dude are we doing cat pictures?
This is Waffle, he likes to be held.
This is Oatmeal. He does not like to be held.
I am wearing a Reynolds 531 T-Shirt.
It might be about the bike, and it might be about the components....or it might be about the Frame Materials....like Reynolds 531. I heard its 4% Chromium, 3.2% Molybdenum and 2.6% magic. The magic has been rumored to be sourced from ground up fairies aka Fairy Dust.

this may have been covered but IMHO it is about the Cycling experience. yes C&V is about the bike but it is so much more.
as far as the bike, it is enjoying the beauty and simplicity of the machine. the challenge of repairing, refurbing, and making art out of dust heap.
as for the ride it is about enjoying riding a your bike for excerise, enjoyment, lifestyle.
I don't think people who go and get a super duper ultra light carbon fiber with dura ace, that ride strictly to best their last personal best, have the same quality of ride we do.
