I am not a big climber, and fairly new to cycling (March of this year) but I live so close to Diablo, she’s calling my name. I’m a bit nervous to attempt it. Any words of wisdom?

The good thing about Diablo is you can climb for as long as you want or are able, turnaround and then it's downhill coming back. If I lived close enough I'd be on it almost daily. Go for it and before you know it you're riding to the summit and then doing repeats. I'd suggest starting off at your easy pace and see how it goes. But even that doesn't make much of a difference. If you start too fast just turnaround and head back down.

I actually did just that last weekend. Got 1,000 feet up and turned around. I shouldn't have ridden hard the day before. I will tackle it next time when I am nice and fresh.

I live on the North side of Diablo and that’s very good advice. I got stronger by simply riding up the hill until I needed to stop. Then I turned around and coasted back home. I think it’s an attitude thing. Another day I would do the same thing, don’t put some huge goal on your shoulders that will just frustrate you. There’s no shame in turning back.

Did my first summit today. It wrecked me lol, but I am glad I did it. Unfortunately, just before the summit, I came across a fellow cyclist who fell as he left the top. He was pretty banged up so I called 911 and he ended up getting life flighted off the summit. Hope he recovers and is back riding!

1 turn in particular always wakes me up... I know the junction on down like the back of my hand, but since I dont summit all the time I dont know that top half descent as well. Congrats on getting there. I always find Juniper on up to just nail me.

I legit didn't think I was going to make it, so many times. In fact I really thought about turning around at Juniper. I am not sure I plan on going to the summit again anytime soon.

It gets easier the more you do it, but it's always a slog from Juniper to Devil's Elbow. But once you hit the corner at Devil's Elbow, it drops back down to a 5% grade, which feels flat. Then you've got about a mile or so to recover for the Wall. Once I hit Devil's Elbow, I know the worst is behind me and I can start looking forward to the summit. And you can always hike the Wall.

What's the water status on Diablo? Are all the water faucets shutdown or are there places to get water?

The water at all the camp sites are off. I found water at the pre summit parking lot.

Just do it. It's not as bad as you think, especially if you live nearby. I actually rode my bike from Castro Valley, to Mt. Diablo, to the top and then back to Castro Valley. That was painful. If I had driven to Mt. Diablo and started cycling from the base, it wouldn't have been nearly as bad.
