Hello all! First time poster here.

I own a bike shop in Mt Shasta, CA and I am working with the local ski area to put together a vintage/retro bike kamikaze style downhill race and vintage bike show.

The event will be on September 14th at the Mt Shasta Ski Park.

More details to follow, but for starters:
The race classes featured will be pre-2000 model bikes with an open class for more modern bikes.
The race will be held on a 2 mile long sketchy loose dirt road with a best of two runs format.
Free camping on Friday the 13th at the Ski Park with a night ride festival going on under the nearly full moon on lit trails.
Most likely best costume and other special prizes will be awarded.

So dust off that old rig in the shed and get ready for an awesome time.

would it suitable for a Coaster brake race?

I certainly think it would, however I have never ridden a coaster brake bike down a mountain road before. I am thinking of taking a coaster brake bike up this weekend and giving it a whirl if time permits.

The downhill is 2 miles long and the average is 9%, so it's steep in places. I have only ridden it 3 times and it is sketchy at speed (35 mph). Super loose with some even looser turns. The surface is not too rocky, but there are a few rocks, no rock gardens, just the random, "oh no if I hit that I'm a goner" rock.

I shot some video on my second run down and hope to make a little video clip by the weekend.

So I rode a coaster brake bike down the course, I have an electric cruiser in the store and I took off the motorized front wheel and battery and threw on a mtb wheel and had a go at it.

Initial reaction 10' in to the descent was, "oh my gosh, I should have taken off that slick tire on the back as well". This thought came to me as I noticed my rear tire attempting to pass me by at the first hint of back pressure. Wow what an experience!

After I realized that I could just barely apply pressure and the bike would sort of slow down without inducing a skid, then things got a little smoother.

The course is super loose and sketchy as I most likely have mentioned.

The pace was slower than I would have liked, but it was a first time adventure for me. Modern full suspension mt bike 4:30 and about 9:00 minutes on the beach bike.

And

There was indeed grease oozing out of my hub and splattered all around my rim!

So after a single test ride, my answer is Yes the course is suitable for a coaster brake, but you better bring some grease along.

I tore my ride down and gave it the works, rust treatment and grease everywhere. Switched out my bars and rear tire to match front.
put on a 'new' saddle, grips and even a new rubber foot for the kickstand. Once I find the stock front wheel, she's ready to race!



Oh and I slammed the rear wheel back and threw on some triple traps!

This Saturday the 14th is the event. Get your machine dialed in and make the trip to the Ski Park. It's going to be a blast!

Schedule of events:

Friday the 13th things get kicked off with the 2nd annual night ride festival from 2pm - 10pm with live entertainment and extended riding hours for the regular $35 lift ticket rate. If you want to do practice laps get there when they open. The Douglas lift will shut down early.

On the 14th it's the ShastaKaze Classic Downhill and Mt. Bike Show.
Race entry is $20 and a lift ticket ($35) if you don't have a season pass.
Registration on event day is from 9:00am - 11:00am with the racing starting at Noon.
Free event t-shirt for racers while supplies last.

6 Racing Classes:
All racers must be 18 or older.
Women's Open (any bike type or age, women may also chose to race in another category if their bike fits)
Repack Class (single speed and 1 brake, coaster brake preferred)
Classic Full Suspension (front and rear suspension bikes pre-2000 model year)
Classic Hardtail (front suspension bikes pre-2000 model year)
Classic Rigid (any fully rigid mt bike)
Open Class (bikes with 2 brakes and a multi-speed drive train newer than 1999's model year)

It's Free to enter your classic mt bike in the show.
People's choice voting to determine best of show winners.

Classic Full Suspension
Open Class
