C60 Stolen from garage - San Jose

Heads up on bike theft in San Jose.
My Colnago C60 was stolen last night from my garage in San Jose. If you're come across a match with someone trying to sell it, it might be mine. It was taken by someone that knows bikes, they choose my bike over my wife's even though hers was closer to the door.

Stolen 9:20pm Thurs 5/23

2015 Colnago C60
52cm OFWH - serial #: C6E517
Campy 11speed
Custom Mavic Wheels built by Terry Shaw before he retired
Conti Tires
Garmin Mount
“spacers” to reduce brake reach

rose garden area. 2 blocks from Pete's. They came back this morning for my wife's bike, but of course we had the garage door locked. Pretty darn bold. We got good pictures of the perps in the daylight. I'll post them later.

Gotcha! Between Park and The Alameda. I’m a tech for AT&T and I work all around the area. I’ll keep an eye out. I’m sure you know, but keep an eye on Craigslist, Offerup and Letgo.

Yep, you got the area. I've been on the lookout. I also talked to the folks at La Dolce Velo, Hyland, and Spokesman (they did the build, so there's a Spokesman sticker). I posted to Bike Index too.

Rob (La Dolce Velo) says he's seen the guy in his shop shoplifting.

Here's a closeup of the dude and another of him and his accomplice. The woman stands on the street as a lookout. In this picture they had another bike. I'd bet very large sums of money that someone else in the neighborhood lost a bike on Saturday morning.

Scumbags!

Freaking dirtbag scum! I’m willing to bet they’re scoping the area and probably be walking around. I live about 7 miles away from you. I’ll keep an eye out.

Yes, had the police out each time and gave them all the footage. They even took prints. There's all sorts of emotions with this, one of them is that I built that bike over many years and many iterations. There's no way I'd be able to reproduce it (cost wise) in one shot.

You might announce the theft and perp pics on nextdoor.com for more local coverage. Good luck.

Thanks for the nextdoor.com recommendation. That went up soon after it happened. Here.

I appreciate the recommendations for sites to search and places to post, I think I have it all covered, but there might be something I missed.

I'm amazed, the police tracked down the dude and he still had my bike! I was persistent and kept calling for status. The detective on the case called the phone number they had attached to this guy. Not sure why they called rather than round him up, but they have their procedures. A few hours later my front porch camera catches the same dude on my porch with a bike.

So, it's at least the same frame. Serial numbers match. Different saddle, different wheels, water bottle cages removed (and different nuts for the cages, I'm fearing they might be stripped now) and a bit more banged up than it was a few months ago. Odd thing is, there's a Shimano 8sp cassette on there now with my Campagnolo 11sp drivetrain. He couldn't have been riding it and he didn't sell it.

Same frame, wheels gone, saddle gone, lots of little bits and parts swapped, a bit worse for wear. Sound like he owes you a bike.

If LE knows the guy and you've got great pics of the thieves and the theft, are they pursuing this as a burglary indictment against the folks involved? Seems the guy owes you the full value of what was stolen, not some facsimile of what you once had.

BTDT myself, on a bike a few months back. Guy was indicted and convicted, admitted to it and agreed to restitution, but has yet to cough up the full value. Typical, so far as I understand these things.

surreal. i guess his thinking is that if he's no longer in possession he can't be arrested for burglary????

Police are sending the case to the DA. Whether or not something happens after that....

Restitution is between the perp and my insurance. I'm trying to figure out now how to deal with the recovery and what the insurance company owes me. Talked to them last week, another call this week should have more info.

Story:
Bike stolen, renter's insurance bought me a new bike except for my deductible=$250
Cops find thief, return bike to me.
I tell insurance, they say they want the old bike - but my buddy buys it from them for cheap and they never have to handle it.
Probation guy for thief says "how much was your loss, after insurance" = $250 deductible.
Probation guy says thief will reimburse my $250 through probation services.
Probation guy sends me the "first check" for about $100.
Never heard from any of them again.
I moved on.

Closing the loop on this. Insurance says that "my bike" wasn't returned, so the claim is still valid. They don't want the frame, it's mine to do with what I want. So, I see some nice new wheels in my future.

Adding to the surrealness of this whole ordeal, I'm pretty happy with how State Farm handled this whole thing.
