Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That is true on the whole, but a big name can mitigate the effect of a not so great GPA. Speaking theoretically here, of course.

Being accepted at Harvard is better than a University of Phoenix degree? I realize maybe not that bad, but institution name speaks pretty loudly.

Where will a film degree take her? My gig of choice is very black and white, and has always been that way. That seems to be a very grey area to me, but I am quite uninformed in the liberal arts area and the pursuit of a career.

The flip side of that is that a so-so test score by a student at lower tier college really hurts. Speaking very untheoretically.

He was a good kid, I had no doubt he would continue to be so far from home. Besides, I had ventured far from home for college myself (Dallas), so the distance argument was doomed.

There are obvious problems with interpreting these data from IOT thermometers (Why? Why? ), but they're interesting.

If she shows some maturity she possibly could transfer there after 1 or 2 years closer to home.

NYU is possible, but TBH the cost of NYU (after the modest scholarship they gave her) will cost about 6x the cost of Temple (which has offered her free tuition for 4 years, we just pay expenses).

We are going to have a big fight on our hands, and I don't look forward to it. There will be more drama to come.
Temple, or take a gap year to work and think about it.

Northwestern is a great school, btw. My mom's sister lives in Evanston. It's a great town. I probably spent (total over my first 18 years of life) about 6 months there. Too cold in winter IMO.
We had a -76 wind chill day. They refused to shut class down and ran buses. It was some nominal amount of time outside and your blood would freeze. Excuse not to go to class.

My mom moved to Wilmette and it was too quiet, so she went back downtown.

I went far away, and then transferred much, much farther away. Getting an education wasn't at the top of my list; getting away was. Such an an odd thing. I got along great with my parents, and then 1967 came along (I was 15). And then 1968 came along, my head snapped around, and that was the end. Of a lot of things.

I don't recall if I'd mentioned it, but schools in MN recently decided to stay closed until at least May 1st and there's speculation that they may not go back all this school year. In the meantime, they've been feeling out the needs for students w/r/t distance education. Now I've just received an email that they're going to be dropping off a device (tablet? laptop? I really don't know) for my son tomorrow at precisely 10:11AM. I wonder what they've got in store.

Yeah, I think the ideal solution would be for her to go to the city for several months and maybe she'd get it out of her system before dropping $50k (or whatever it is) on school.

Virtual school started here yesterday. Starts at 9:00 a.m. with live homeroom and today was the first day of live math, and it was all jacked up. Live math postponed because I think Mr. Speer needs to upgrade his internet connection. School ends at 2:30 p.m.

We're not going to go back to school this year. Governor basically said it yesterday. Welcome to online school. They've been doing the Chromebook distribution for a few weeks, but only if you needed one.
