Addiction LXXVIII

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I have no idea how a Peloton class works, other than what was shown on the commercial.

Dear Mr Roberts:

I would like to bring to your attention (or to your designee) an unfortunate situation that occurred today, April 6, 2020.

I was riding my bicycle on Atwater Drive near the intersection of Atwater Drive and Quarry Point Rd in Malvern, Pa at precisely 4:15PM. The posted speed limit is 15MPH, and I was riding at about this speed. One of your “Comcast” repair vans was behind me, and overtook/passed me in a VERY unsafe manner, it came within a few inches of hitting me. That’s despite me going the 15MPH speed limit. So not only did the driver pass me dangerously, but also clearly went well over the posted speed limit in doing so.

I do want to apologize to the driver of the van for my loud and angry response. It was a very scary and emotional moment for me, so I did hurl a loud verbal insult. I raised my voice so I do expect the driver heard me. I am sorry about my language.

Nevertheless, he/she drove in a VERY unsafe and dangerous manner which was very upsetting to me. The state law requires a driver give a 4 foot berth when passing a cyclist.

My hope is that my apology gets passed on to the driver, but also that it stimulates a “teachable moment” not only to your driver as an individual, but also to your entire fleet. We all must share the road as safely as possible. I don’t want the driver to get any type of punishment or reprimand, but a gentle reminder would be appreciated. I am sure the driver saw me as I was wearing a very high-visibility yellow/black jersey and also had a bright rear blinking light.

Regards,

Douglas Atlas

According to these models:

COVID-19

Delaware is now 2 days past the peak in hospital resource usage - apparently without having run out of ICU beds. This is only a mathematical model, of course, and there are still real people in the hospital.

Our Governor is making a statement this afternoon. Yesterday, he banned short-term rentals (hotel, AirBnB, etc) except for "Essential Travelers". He is running out of things to ban..

Heading to Costco this morning for “senior hour” shopping. Wish me luck. Yesterday I tried to go but the line outside was 75’ long so I passed.

Update, I did get an email reply from comcast, cut/paste is below.

----------------------Good evening Mr. Atlas,

Thank you for your email to Brian Roberts regarding your unpleasant experience. By chance were you able to get the license plate or truck#? We would like to address this.

So that we can better assist you, please reply back to this email with your service address, city, state, zip code and a telephone number where you can best be reached.

Once we receive this information, you will be contacted by phone within a few hours. Our goal is to address this as quickly as possible!

We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience with us, as we strive to deliver a superior customer experience to our customers every day.

Sincerely,

xxxxxxxxx

This looks like a slightly customized form letter, but at least it's something. I replied via email that I did not get a license plate or vehicle number, but I noted the time and exact location, so if they have the technology I expect they could contact the driver.

That said, I have low expectations for any further response from them. But at least I got it off my chest in a fairly civilized manner.

Luck wished!

Going to the Commissary today, but I don't qualify as a senior there and there's no density control. Fortunately, it doesn't tend to be crowded. Will wear a mask and maybe a bandana over it for extra security and because I don't want anyone to think the mask was misappropriated.

Hey, it's more than one usually gets from a non-contact road encounter.

datlas Many years ago back in the early 80s, I was hit by the large side mirror of a cable tv van. I was knocked into the ditch. The van stopped about 500' or so down the road but didn't come back to check on me, but instead left after I picked myself up.The company was Continental which was one of the precursors to Comcast/Xfinity.

Luckily, it was winter and I was wearing numerous layers because we didn't have fancy tech clothes back then and I wasn't hurt but just bruised. I filed a police report but the sheriffs dept. suggested that I talk to the CATV office first and if I didn't get satisfaction to let them know.

I went in the next day and the office manager knew exactly who the driver was by the time and location. He told me that the driver had some "notes" in his file and may very well be terminated if the head office deemed it necessary but at the least he would probably get a "vacation" without pay if handled locally. By this time, I could tell that I wasn't damaged in any way so I said that I would let him handle it.

For a long time after, every Continental CATV van passed me as far over as possible so I assume they had an employee cycling talk of some kind.
