G_I_B_B_O_N I'd like to ridicule you and say that's moronic and dangerous...but I kinda did that myself in the same situation. I converted my old MTB to drop-bars last fall and did some very sketchy test rides just to experience the new bars before getting the new brakes properly mounted. I just didn't post that part of the project.

Aww, didn't mean to offend. Just thought people might get a chuckle at my expense.
I hope you mean without the drop bars haha.
Definitely moronic and dangerous. No denying that. Couldn't help myself. I was excited.
I could have just done the old BMX "jam your shoe into wedge where the seat stay meets the tire", but it's been so long I forgot about that.

Definitely wrong tape. A nice color matching Duct tape only way to go

How do you shift and use the brakes with the tape on the brake levers?

Did you ride it that way? Think you need to move it forward 30 mm or so

There's not enough torque to shift the front derailleur and it might have ripped the masking tape. The rear derailleur was fine. I just kept it on the small chainring to cruise around a bit. I do live on a hill though, so there's always that excitement.

I'm pretty sure, at least I hope, that was tongue-in-cheek. To me, that's why we have backup bikes. disconnect all of the old cockpit stuff, install the new handlebar, and go ride the other bike!
