Bike Porn 1980 Raleigh Competition GS. Is this thing cracked.Help.
Hey guys. I know some of you dont like video. So I added some pictures. Take a look at what looks like to be a crack in the frame and let me know what you think it is! There is a video linked below.

I think you may have a tape line between the OEM paint (above the bottle braze-ons) and after market re-spray around the the braze-ons. Cracks do not, usually, follow such a straight path. Neither the silver nor the black liveries of the Competition had bottle braze-ons so tap the tube and see if it rings or sounds dead. Dye penetrant applied to the "crack" would also help discount the presence of a fracture. Check below the bottle braze-ons to see if there is a similar ridge at the edge of the brazing zone like the one above.

I just looked. I dont see a tape line below the braze ons. However I did grow some balls and chipped the paint away and found a much smoother tube underneath. Thanks for your wisdom!

Interesting. I was looking at new decal sets for this and they do look more like the 79. I have to look more into it. For some reason I thought it was an 80

Serial # for 1979 will begin with W, then another letter, then 9. Serial # for 1980 will begin with W, then another letter, then 0.

I have a 1977 in black like yours. 1977 was the first year of the GS, I know they evolved a bit . Mine has no braze ons for a water bottle. I was able to get mine from the original owner who bought it new for his wife and she hated it so it just sat in his garage until 2015 or so when he sold it to me . The original Brooks Pro was not even broken in. I love riding it and it gets more attention from folks when I take it out. For some reason Raleigh is popular with a lot of people. I am glad it isn’t cracked and I agree that a straight crack, particularly in that location, is unlikely. The tubing cracks I have seen(not many) are more diagonal or helical.

With some cracks you can tap the area with a rubber mallet or protect the area with a cloth and tap it with a small hammer...you won’t get a “tone” if there is a crack or break...next time...
