I just picked up some Pearl Izumi leg warmers and am just going to use my Under Armor base layers under my jersey this year.

I have the Pearl Izumi Elite Thermals. Good for temps in the 50s. Usually wear with short sleeve jersey and short sleeve base layer. They do a good job of staying in place. Make sure you get the right size or you will be cutting off circulation or pulling them back up constantly.

Sorry, just messing with you. I have a couple sets of armwarmers:

SmartWool - great for a mild day - 50s. Love that they keep you warm but breath and wick moisture very well.
Novara - if it's upper 40s with sun or lower 50s with wind, this are the pick. And a good price.

Any colder, and it's jacket time.

As a newbie, what are the advantages to arm/leg warmers vs tights/longsleve jersey?

I bought insulated tights, a jersey, gloves, shoe covers and a headband from Wiggle and had my first ride Saturday with them.

It was 12 celsius and it felt about perfect. I figure this combo will be ok down to about 5 or 6 degrees then I will need to go to a jacket or something.

It was a little chilly on my legs and arms yesterday, mid 60's often in the shade and windy. I ordered and set of each from the china seller I had bought other stuff from. Hoping they will be long enough. I'll have to buy everything for cold weather riding my cold weather stuff not is suited from ATV's and dirt bikes, don't want to be pedaling in GoreTex and Wolverines.

had a crazy time with some knee warmers I picked up from REI... They're the $40 dollar pearl Izumi elite's... materials are great but the sizing is sooooo tricky... 1st trip I purchased the older model ones in a size L b/c they were on sale for $19 bucks... I wore them out on a ride once and they were waaaay too big...I tried them on at the store and for some reason even though they came all the way up to the top of my thigh I still bought them... Suffice to say that ride in them was super uncomfortable and chilly because the bottom was wide open around my chin area...

In any case I took them back, but they were out of the Elite model that was on sale in size M ... So after some jedi mind trickery and just outright bargaining, they let me get the $40 dollar, newer versions with the better top band... I rolled outta there with my size medium knee warmers feeling great.... Then I went for another ride and the same problem happened... like there was little difference in the fit and they were baggy at the bottom and came up waay too high on my thigh... I couldn't believe that a size medium was too big for me... I am not a small man by any stretch of the imagination...I'm a clyde pretty much but my legs are svelt and muscular... so, in not anticipating that, I again had to go back to REI... This time however I went to different location as I was with my father in the city... I was worried they might of thought I was attempting to run some sort of hustle, but to my delight, they let me return them again, this time for a size small that I tried on thoroughly in the store...

gotta say, hats off to the people that work at REI... they ALL were super nice and happy to help my silly, impatient butt out with the returns...

the advantages are they roll up and fit in a jersey pocket when it gets too hot or can be carried when it gets cold after sweating and the sun is going down.
If you are riding in an area where the temps stay consistent it's probably not an advantage

My preferred arm warmers are Ibex merino wool. A little pricey, but worth it. Amazon often has them $7-10 less than retail.

I like knit arm warmers. My favorites are an old pair of polypro Adidas that I've gotten a ton of use from. Defeat armskins are essentially the same as these,but don't fit me as well. Also have some giro merino that I got for Xmas last year.

Below 60 I use a long sleeve jersey. Below 40 I don't ride, lucky this is AZ and that's 2 days a year...every other year.

The warmers can be added/removed mid-ride if the conditions change. I use combinations of warmers and baselayers.

Bought some arm warmers, but only used them once. Never fit my upper arm right, seemed like a nag rather than a plus. I just bear the cold for an hour or so if needed. Doesn't make a huge difference anyway.

I'm in Florida, so when it's "cold", e.g. temps in the low 50s, I really like the Pearl Izumi warmers that have wind blocking panels. If it's going to remain below there mid 40s the whole ride, then I usually use a jacket or long sleeve jersey with wind blocking vest.

I recently picked up a pair of Defeet wool arm warmers. Used them on Saturday morning on a cool/slightly wet ride and they were perfect.
