Vintage Pre 80's Trek Bike??? What is it worth?
I'm trying to figure out exactly what this Trek bike is and what it may be worth. From the serial number M5F8P26, I think it's a June 1978 bike, 25.5" frame size. But the "M" is a bit confusing to decode form the vintage vin site. There is also an "X" marked underneath the serial/vin number on the frame, what's that about?? Does anyone have any more info? I'm t
hinking of selling it and I'd like to figure out what it's worth. Thanks in advance for your help.

Please take those tthe bar extenders off this bike and sell them seperate whatever you do, As for model year it seems to match a early 80's 400 series bike very nicve light touring sports but not real high end as for value say $200 or so.

That's going to be tough to sell just because of it's large size and the 27" wheels. I like that it's still got all the original parts right down to the safety reflectors. If it was me I wouldn't do anything to it at all. Sell it "as - is" and, try to get as much as possible. I'm guessing somewhere around $150.

Might might the extenders be worth?

The aero bars aren't worth much. $10-20 maybe. But the bike will look so much better without them.

From vintage trek SN area, assume it is 1980/81 produced offsite
Serial numbers beginning with M or N (41X and 61X bikes or frames) seem to have a different meaning for what normally is the year digit. The year digit is the fourth character in the number. In the 50 M and N serial numbers that have been sent in by owners, the year numbers go from 0 through 9. The remaining part of the serial numbers seem normal.
According to the brochures, Trek did not make 41X and 61X bikes or frames during 76, 77, 78, and 79 and also not in 83, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, or 89. These serial numbers apparently do not follow the year convention used for other Trek models. It is likely these frames, SNs beginning with M or N (Models 41x and 61X), were contracted out or were made in a separate Trek facility, and were given the old serial number form so as not to interfere with the sequential numbers being assigned by Trek in their main shop, which began in late 1980........
For M and N leading serial numbers, if the TREK letters on the seattube have no colorwrap behind, the bike is from 1980 or perhaps 1981. If it has a colorwrap, the bike is probably from 1982.....

I would agree it is 1982/1983 bike first years they did the Trek embossing and it is slightly different than than the classic Trek made lugs and drops with made in branding likely contract built there's a good chance it could be a 312 one of the rarest Treks but doesn't do much for value.

^^^^^^ An '82/'83 would not have the separate lettering. That generally indicates '80 or possibly '81. As mentioned in the snip from vintage-trek above.
I just noticed the flickstand -- for the rear wheel?

sorry but your bike is new and boring and this is a section for classic and vintage bikes, so good luck with your bike sale, but a vintage trek like the one in this post will garner a lot more information and interest because its just way better than what u got.... but here's a thought in the year 2045 your bike will roughly be the same age as the one in this post so keep it and it will be worth a boat load....

First of all, this is a thread that is a year old.
Second of all, not only did you bump a year old thread but you hijacked it.
Third of all, nobody knows if you really are stylish or.. "chic" so the way you dress shouldn't really matter but the way you carry yourself does.
Stay classy, have respect.
