I've had this SS/FG project going for well over 6 years. Bike has already been converted to SS/FG. A few years ago I tried bullhorns and TT-style brake levers. Didn't care for the position. I have a NIB 1" threadless fork to be installed (original fork was twisted). I also have a 1 1/8" stem to use. I want to try a riser bar setup, just to see if I like it. So if I were to place and order with Retro, what should be looking at? I already have a new headset (somewhere). I saw that Scrod has the shims for the 1" to 1 1/8" stems, so no worries with using my current stem.

So I need:

Bars (25.4mm clamp)

Grips?

Brake Levers?

I welcome your suggestions.

Bars are pretty much personal preference. I went through a bunch before I found ones I liked, in fact I have 3 pairs of risers on Craigslist right now. They come in various heights (rise) of 1-3" and sweeps. I wouldn't spend too much on them till you find one you like. You can usually find riser bars in local bike shop parts bins.

I like the Dia Comp MX 110 lever. It's cheap but it's got a narrow clamp so you can cut your bars narrow and doesn't take up too much space and is solid. A lot of people use cross levers like the ones made by Tektro or Cane Creek. Personally I like the cheap Dia Comp better.

Grips? Ourys are pretty standard. I started using ODI Longneck Flangeless grips. Again personal preference.

Not cheap, but great bars that come in many colors and are 24mm at the ends so you can use cross levers next to the grips. I've got them on my chrome Soma Rush and they look and feel great.

These grips are everything OURY's are missing & then some. Super grippy and supple material that absorbs vibrations very well. No gooey nastiness when they get old & no slipping if you suffer from sweaty palms.

As for fitting a bar lever, these can be cut & sandwiched between separated/ trimmed segments of grips.

Grips - Ergon GP1. They are very comfortable.

Levers - Paul's Compact Love Levers. They are very high quality and look sharp.

As I said, personal preference, I found the Nittos mentioned above have too much backsweep (12 degrees) and the Champ grips are pretty hard.

As for grips, I'd just venture to eBay, search for "rubber handlebar grips" and pick the colour you like. I've got several "OURY"-look-a-likes and couldn't be happier. Comfy, grippe and looks the part!

Thanks for the many replies. This project has been picked up and then dropped many times, but now I want to get it completed. As much as I love my Kilo, I am curious to see what the geo is like in this build.

Yeah, that's a pretty good price on the real deal! Here Oury's costs circa 20 USD plus shipping, so around 25-35 USD. The aforementioned imitations costs 3 USD shipping included on eBay.

Here's my setup on a chrome Soma Rush. Nitto B260-AA silver risers ($48) with muddy light brown OURY grips ($12) and a Tektro 24mm cross lever.

I have pretty much the same setup on my Bianchi that Tejano has, except i have some cheap risers instead of nittos.. but otherwise oury grips and tektro cross lever

That's a sweet looking Bianchi!! Mine is from the early 80's. It was a 10-speed that I had converted some years back at my LBS (before I started working on my own bikes). I'm anxious to get the build I want and then have the frame painted this winter,

Thanks. have fun with your build. this is my third bar setup, and my cheapest so far, total cost was $50 buying everything new. Half the fun is trying to get your bike perfect for you.

I'll be placing my order for stuff tonight. Plan to run this one fixed, not planning on a rear brake. My Kilo is SS at the moment, but may switch back to FG next week since the temps are warmer and I can wear my cleats again.
