pedal choices on a fixie
Hey, all.
I just got a new bike with a flip-flop hub (I'm used to riding single-speeds strictly) and am pretty psyched to start putting that fixed cog to use.
The thing is, I need new pedals first - because the bike (a custom build) has weird comfort pedals that don't accommodate any type of foot retention system whatsoever. I'm trying to decide on what to replace them with, and THE OPTIONS ARE OVERWHELMING. I've narrowed it down to the MKS Sylvan Stream and the Fyxation Gates (or some other BMX-style platform pedal with PLASTIC PINS).
Some questions:
- I've heard that BMX-style platform pedals, due to the metal traction pins, can do some damage to your leg if your foot slips and the pedal spins around and hits you in the shin. (Thus, the popular argument against using them on a fixed gear.) Is the same true for molded-on plastic pins, or are plastic ones more innocuous?
- Would plastic pins on a BMX platform pedal be worse in this situation than the serrated edges of a vintage rat-trap style pedal? (I can't see how they would be, but then, I've never ridden BMX pedals.)
Please do not discuss these pedal options in consideration of other factors, such as pedal size/clearance and the chance of pedal strike. I'm not interested in these particular considerations at this particular moment.

The plastic ones still hurt like hell.
Just get the sylvans, they'll look better with cages than a large bmx platform. Plenty of people seem to love them.

^Scrod has a gif for every occasion.
I found my MKS Sylvan pedals to be uncomfortable if I wore really soft soled shoes. With my Chrome shoes, they're great.

since I have size 14 feet, I dig bmx pedals more than a "track" pedal. the odyssey twisted pedals are my go-to. durable, cheap, comfy and work awesome with a pair of vans. plus the colors they offer are pretty fun.

Would you describe them as hazardous, when they hit you in the shins? I find BMX pedals appealing as well, but the potential for unnecessary leg injuries would be a bit of a deal-breaker. I've never ridden fixed gear except in large vacant spaces, on friends' bikes. Not the most skilled rider.

the black ops nylo-pros are pretty cool...I think other companies use this same mold.
also, straitline makes some rad pedals I've had before and would recommend....

Yeah PD-M520 or 530. I have been extremely happy with my 530's and a pair of relaxed SPD shoes.
Had to ditch my straps in favor of good ol' SPD.

You can get straps for BMX pedals. They're very common, I don't know why you haven't heard of them?

"More" is an adverb of intensification when applied to adjectives, especially those that have more than 2 syllables and thus don't have a comparative form. "Facebook is more exclusive than MySpace." You wouldn't want to argue that "exclusive" is a noun would you? Or maybe you think the only grammatical way to say this would be "Facebook is exclusiver than MySpace".
