Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Messengers to the Rescue!

Two bike messengers saved the day for a Los Angeles man Monday when they chased a bike thief for five blocks downtown and then knocked him to the ground, causing him to flee, police said...
As the thefts have increased, some people have taken matters into their own hands. Last month, bike messengers downtown caught two suspected thieves, teenage boys who attended a local Catholic high school, and stripped them down to their boxer shorts before taking their cellphones, backpacks and clothes.

Having had to spend some considerable time breaking a cheapo combo lock that broke whilst locking my bike at school I can say from personal expirience that people don't involve themselves most of the time.
I was sitting with a hacksaw for a good 15 minutes in the middle of the day, freeing my bicycle, the only person that even stoped only stopped for a second to say "Is that your bike?" and after I replied "Yeah" he walked away and did nothing else.
Oh and did I mention I was doing this all under a sign the college security had put up saying
"Bike theft is on the rise! Please report all suspicious activity to the campus security"
Yeah, I almost wish someone had started screaming "Don't steal bikes bro!" at me

Even the crappiest of bikes can get stolen. But bike thieves still suck.

Kinda makes sence in the circumstances though, I mean they called one of the kids parents and explained what happened and where they were so, just a harsh lesson really

My friend hacked a U-lock on his bike on campus the other day because he lost (both) his keys. Nobody bothered him at all.

I think if you were doing this at night people would become more suspicious, and perhaps alert the authorities. If youre doing it in broad daylight people assume you arent doing anything wrong. you could probably get away with unbolting all the parts off of a bike as long as it was in the middle of the day
