I am about to do some travelling and have arranged (as one does) to buy a frame and bring it back on the flight.

This is an under-bed storage thingy sold by that nordic flat-pack furniture concern; I added the black straps on the outside:



I added some wood inside, to make a frame for the frame:



One dropout is screwed to the frame (this is a test frame, about the same size):



The bb is held between two blocks, with a carriage-bolt between them; one block is screwed to the frame to start with, when the last fame bit goes on it is screwed to the other block:




The head tube, and the fork in the pic above, will be a bit more secure with extra foam and zip-ties:



Without a frame inside, everything comes apart and packs up nice and small:

Clever.

Timely for me since I have been over-thinking how to build a box for shipping a f/f that varies a bit from yours, but not far. 1x4s wood frame, metal reinforced corners, egg crate foam lining, hinged luaun plywood cover, some sort of internal lashing method.

I too will post pics once I have a prototype.

I was fortunate that the frame would fit inside, it small and just does.

The storage thing was the largest they sell, and I did look around for others and none were as big, as good, or as cheap.

If your frame is larger than about 53cm it might not fit.

Before I got the box it was just going to be wood and that plastic corrugated cardboard analogue, that stuff folds and would
a) protect the sides
b) provide evidence of any penetration
Election signs are my usual source.
I cut a pair of squares of it to go in the ends when the box is empty:
The key thing for me was making it - when empty - small enough not to attract an excess baggage fee.



You can see how little space the wood takes up.
It was going to be filled with those foam bits to protect the frame, but there was still loads of room.
Then I hear from SWMBO "...um, have you got room for a yoga mat?"

Years ago I built a box from plywood, to carry my coupled bike. Modified it for every trip. TSA was in it every time. Then I came across a used hard shell case. TSA didn’t even know it was there.

First stage of un-packing, all is good.

Even better, when packed with some extra stuff in the middle, the check-in person put a label thing on and pushed it onto the belt - no extra charge, not even a glance.

Even^2 better, I am in contact with the proprietor of the shop that sold it and he sounds interested in figuring out the origins.
